Abstract:: The Stabler and Lea families were Quakers of Sandy Spring, Maryland, and Alexandria, Virginia. The collections contains chiefly correspondence of Mary Lea Stabler (1822-1888), with her mother, Elizabeth Ellicott Lea (1793-1858), her sister, Martha Lea (1819-1900), her brother, James Lea (1816-1857), and Martha Ellicott Tyson (1795-1873).

Abstract:: Samuel McPherson Janney was a Virginia Quaker minister, author, educator, and reformer. In 1839 he opened a boarding school for girls in Loudoun County. He traveled widely in the ministry, meeting with other denominations as well as being immersed in the contemporary issues facing the Society of Friends. Among his activities were establishing schools for African Americans and women, creating public schools in Virginia, and the abolition of slavery. In 1869 he was appointed Superintendent of Indian Affairs in Nebraska. The collection contains primarily correspondence of Samuel M. Janney with family and with friends such as John Comly, Joseph Dugdale, Benjamin Ferris, William Dudley Foulke, Isaac T. Hopper, Halliday Jackson, Dillwyn Parrish, Edward Parrish, Moses Sheppard, John Jackson, Deborah Wharton, Halliday Jackson, Barclay White, William Dorsey, and George M. Truman. Abstract:: Eleanor Stabler Clarke (1896-1995), a birthright Quaker, was active in the American Friends Service Committee and other Quaker organizations, and served on the Swarthmore College Board of Managers from 1935-1971. She was the daughter of Charles M. and Ida Palmer Stabler, and in 1918 she married William Anderson Clarke, Sr. Her sister, Cornelia Stabler Gillam (1898-1979) was active in the theater and performed for the U.S.O. in 1945 and 1946. The collection includes a genealogy with stories and photos compiled by Eleanor Stabler Clarke (1896-1995) titled "A Goodly Heritage," and writings by Cornelia Stabler Gillam (1898-1979). Cornelia Gillam's writings include her one-woman dramatic biography "Charlotte Bronte," which she first performed in 1957, and "European and Veterans Hospitals Via USO," given as lectures in 1945 and 1946

Abstract:: This collection primarily includes correspondence of Mahlon and Sarah Janney. These letters relate mainly to family and local news of Loudon Co., Virginia. One letter, written by Thomas Scattergood and Josiah Bunting, provides a brief account of their travels as Quaker ministers. Also included are unsigned fragments, one of which provides an account of a visit to Virginia Yearly Meeting, and another of which concludes a poem addressed to Richard Mott. Also included are notes from the collector, Elizabeth J. Baldwin, on her family history.

Abstract:: This collection includes the correspondence and miscellaneous papers of a Quaker family concerning the Hicksite/Orthodox controversy in Ohio, conditions of everyday life in Virginia and the Midwest, and observations on slavery and the use of tobacco. Also included is an account of Cleaver family births and deaths, 1729-1895.
