Abstract:: John W. Townsend graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with an A.B. in 1875, and went on to a career as an industry executive and capitalist as well as a local historian. The Townsend Collection contains documents ranging in date from 1726 to 1933. The vast majority of these items belonged to John W. Townsend. These papers trace local and national history through John W. Townsend's personal, family and business interests.

Cornelius Weygandt Papers, 1787-1955 (inclusive) 1920-1955 (bulk)

Abstract:: Cornelius Weygandt attended the University of Pennsylvania and received his PhD in 1901. Weygandt had a fifty-five year career as a teacher in the Department of English at Penn, and also obtained literary success for his storytelling skills. The Cornelius Weygandt Papers document his literary efforts primarily from the 1920s to the 1950s. The majority of the collection contains unpublished of essays and books he had prepared and may have planned to publish.

Abstract:: William Martin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1786, and established a practice in Georgetown, VA. Three years later he returned to Chester, PA where he continued his medical career. The William Martin Papers consist of miscellaneous manuscripts that were bound by his grandson, John Hill Martin, around 1865. The documents include legal cases, medical observations, correspondence, speeches, and literary extracts in Martin's handwriting.
