Abstract:: Handwritten draft of a reply to an address from women of Exeter, England, in response to their plea urging their American sisters to help prevent war between England and the United States. This draft, of which the final version no longer exists, warns that a mother could sow the seed of blood-thirsty ambition in her son "when in his childish hours she gave him tiny weapons, and taught him how to mimic war's murderous game." Signed by Lucretia Mott. The reply, which was sent to England and is now lost, was signed by 3,525 Philadelphia women. Friendly Addresses were inspired by Joseph Crosfield, an English Quaker, and Elihu Burritt, an American, to promote friendship between the United States and Great Britain on a person-to-person level. Abstract:: Contains the papers of the Allen Family, a Quaker family of Philadelphia and Delaware County, Pennsylvania, which traced its ancestry back to one of William Penn's commissioners. Includes papers relating to the Allen and related Breidenhart, Casdorp, Gibbons, Hubley, Jacobs, Matlack, and Samuel families. The Allen family papers contain extensive genealogical material, family correspondence, journals and memorials which provide excellent source material on Quaker family life in the 19th century in the Philadelphia area. Of particular interest are letters from Charles and Rebecca Allen to their children, several of whom were educated at Westtown School.

Abstract:: Elizabeth Shinn Haines (1823-1883) was a Philadelphia Orthodox Quaker. She married Henry Haines in 1845. The collection contains diaries, commonplace books, and albums.

Abstract:: Florence E. Taylor was the descendant of a Quaker family whose roots went back to the settlement of Pennsylvania. Her parents were Frederick W. Taylor (1848-1919) and Emily Hunt Taylor (d. 1942). Fred Taylor, a wealthy Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist to the Society of Friends, was the son of Charles Maus Taylor and Anna E. W. Sterling Taylor. His grandfather was Israel Taylor (1782-1850). The collection includes correspondence of Israel Taylor (1782-1850) and Charles M. Taylor (1817-1893), diary (1932-1939) and other writings of Emily H. Taylor, and biographical data concerning the Taylor and Sterling families, including memorabilia and pictures.

Abstract:: This collection contains over 240 mainly incoming manuscript letters addressed to Thomas Evans, a Philadelphia druggist, author, editor, Orthodox Quaker minister of Philadelphia and, in 1833, one the founders of Haverford College. The letters, 1823-1859, contain material on his very active role in the Society of Friends and the problems of religious doctrine before and during the Hicksite and Wilburite schisms within the Quaker faith. The collection also includes papers and legal documents from Evans' role as trustee for multiple Quaker estates.
