John J. Tyler Arboretum records, 1944-2014 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Tyler Arboretum, in Media (Delaware County), Pennsylvania, sits on land that was owned for over 250 years by members of the Minshall, Painter, and Tyler families, who used it as a working farm and summer residence. During the mid 19th century, brothers Minshall and Jacob Painter planted over 1,000 types of trees and shrubs, many of them exotic, on the property. In 1944, Tyler Arboretum was established through a bequest of Laura Hoopes Tyler (1859-1944), named for her husband. The John J. Tyler Arboretum records, 1944-2014, consist of administrative records, correspondence, financial papers, historical research and other materials relating to Tyler Arboretum.

Abstract:: Edward Clyde Eichholtz (1875-1963) was an amateur photographer from Drexel Hill, Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The E.C. Eichholtz glass negatives, circa 1905-1982 (bulk 1905-1917), consist of approximately 1000 negatives taken by Eichholtz that document the people, landscapes, buildings/properties, events, and railroads in the area of Drexel Hill. Other geographic areas that are documented include Blair County (Pa.), Philadelphia, parts of New Jersey, and Niagara Falls. The collection also includes some paper prints, background history on Eichholtz, and partial inventories created by Eichholtz.

Kedron United Methodist Church records, 1871-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Kedron Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in Morton, Delaware County, Pennsylvania in 1860. Circa 2006, Kedron United Methodist Church was discontinued and several, if not all, of its remaining members transferred to C. C. Hancock Memorial United Methodist Church in nearby Springfield Township (Delaware County, Pennsylvania). The Kedron United Methodist Church records, 1871-2006, consist largely of membership and vital records such as baptisms, marriages, deaths, and transfers. Also included are some minutes of the Official Board, Charge Conference records, photographs, anniversary programs, historical materials, directories, bulletins, and other documents.

Gibbons Home (Springfield, Pa.) records, ca.1880-ca.1987 (bulk: 1892-1969) (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Gibbons Home was a residential home in Springfield Township, Delaware County, Pa., for elderly women of limited income. It was established in 1918 by the will of Sallie P. Gibbons, the last survivor of a family which had local Quaker roots. The Home was finally opened in the family house on Baltimore Pike in 1940. The house was torn down in 1970 to make way for a mall, and the Gibbons Home moved to a new building on Lincoln Avenue in Springfield. In 2000 the assets of the Home were transferred to Presbyterian Homes, and the property was sold. The collection contains legal, property, and financial records of the Gibbons Home, and Gibbons family photographs, paintings, and some Gibbons family memorabilia which was retained when the Home moved to its new location.

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of the Darlington family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and Woodstown, New Jersey. Quakers with strong ties to Swarthmore College, the family was involved in education, social and peace concerns, and businesses in the Philadelphia area. Charles J. Darlington (1894-1966) served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends during the reunification of the two Philadelphia Yearly Meetings. The collection includes family correspondence relating to the Darlington, Shortlidge, Gause, and Palmer families as well as genealogical research and 20th century Quaker activities.

Lloyd Thompson and William Cash papers on Negro baseball leagues, circa 1912-1987

Abstract:: One of the dominant teams in baseball's Negro Leagues in the 1920s was the Hilldale Club of Darby, Pennsylvania. Lloyd Thompson, a pioneering African American sports writer, was a member of Hilldale's Board of Directors and was the only individual involved in both its formation in 1910 and disbanding in 1932. William W. (Bill 'Ready') Cash was a well-known African American professional baseball player in the 1940s and 1950s, and later served on the Board of Directors for the Negro League Baseball Players Association. The Lloyd Thompson and William Cash papers on Negro baseball leagues, circa 1912-1987, largely pertain to the Hilldale Club, with a smaller amount of materials on Cash's career. The collection includes correspondence, season bookings and scorebooks, player statistics, Hilldale Club financial records, Delaware County Athletic Association and Jersey City Colored Athletes materials, clippings, and photographs.

Abstract:: Chadds Ford in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was historically a crossroads, first a fording point across the Brandywine River and later near the intersection of two train lines. It is known for its role in the Revolutionary War--the Battle of the Brandywine was fought here in 1777--and in art history--Howard Pyle's studio and students gave rise to the Brandywine School of Art, fostered by three generations of the Wyeth family. The Chadds Ford Historical Society photograph and document collection, circa 1865-2013, consists of various documents, such as deeds, correspondence, and financial papers; photographs, including daguerreotypes and tintypes; and maps; that document the people, places, and landscape of the Chadds Ford area.

Abstract:: Chester Heights CampMeeting Association (CHCMA), located in Chester Heights, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, is a non-profit, parachurch, interdenominational, religious organization dedicated to the evangelical ministry of proclaiming Christianity to the world. Chartered in 1872, the Association was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and, as of 2015, continues to host an annual summer concert series, as well as walking tours, membership meetings, banquets, and annual service days. The Chester Heights CampMeeting Association records, 1812-2015 (bulk 1920-2015), consist of administrative and financial records, legal documents, photographs, scrapbooks, and other materials relating to the CHCMA. Abstract:: Concord Township in Delaware County, Pennsylvania was incorporated in 1683, and includes the four villages of Concordville, Elam, Markham and Ward. Originally in Chester County, the township became part of Delaware County when Chester County was partitioned in 1789. The Concord Township Historical Society subject files, circa 1900-2013, include newspaper clippings, photocopies of secondary and primary source documents, pamphlets and ephemera, and a few photos and primary source documents on various local history topics including people, churches, landmarks and historical organizations (such as Newlin Grist Mill and Newlin family), local businesses and organizations, buildings, maps, and railroads.

Abstract:: Beulah Newlin Pennington (1896-1990), who was born and lived all her life in Concord Township, Delaware County, Pennsylvania, taught in public schools there for 45 years before retiring in 1966. Concord Elementary School was renamed The Pennington School in her honor. The Beulah Newlin Pennington papers, 1890-2003, primarily consist of materials relating to Pennington's work as a teacher in Concord, personal papers, and some local history research materials.
