Abstract:: Walter Hinchman's portfolio of sketches and photographs includes the many of the plates used in his book, "Sketches & Poems." The sketches were done during Hinchman's time at a machine shop in Ohio at the end of the Civil War and on a survey trip (1867-1868) for a transcontinental railway from Kansas to California. There are sketches of the Pennsylvania Steel Company (1869), animals, flowers, trees, people, and landscapes.
