Abstract:: Theodore Hetzel (1906-1990) was a Quaker professor of engineering at Haverford College in Haverford, Pennsylvania, whose interests led him to involvement with Native American and Quaker issues. "War Taxes: The Experience of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Quakers, 1681-1800", 1986

Abstract:: The manuscript of Elaine Crauderueff's thesis for a Master of Arts in religious studies provides an overview of religious background of Quaker pacifism, including Quaker relationships with government authorities and the Peace Testimony of 1660. It also describes Quakers in the legislature, consequences of Quaker pacifism, and war taxes from 1750 to 1800, particularly those in Pennsylvania and in the colonies during the Revolutionary War period.

Abstract:: This history of Middletown Friends Meeting spans from 1686 to 1986, and begins by describing how early Friends in Chester County met in family homes, and the history of building the meeting house in 1699. The history describes the Middletown Meeting's reactions to various historical issues, including European American treatment of Native Americans and slavery and abolition. At the back of the volume is a Middletown Monthly Meeting Membership List from February, 1986.

Jean Scobie Davis papers, 1892-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Jean Scobie Davis, a 1914 graduate of Bryn Mawr College, taught economics and sociology at Agnes Scott College, Vassar College, Pierce College, Wells College and the American Women's College in Beirut. A lifetime interest in prison reform resulted in her work at the New York State Correctional Facility in Bedford Hills, New York. The Jean Scobie Davis papers is a collection consisting largely of Jean Scobie Davis' diaries and correspondence covering nearly all stages of her life. The collection, which dates from 1892 to 1985, is divided into seven subseries: "Autobiographical Material;" "Correspondence;" "Diaries;" "Family History;" "Photographs;" "Prison Reform;" and "Scrapbooks and Guestbook." Material found in the collection is diverse, and consists of letters, reports, bound diaries as well as loose diary pages, photographs, scrapbooks, and handwritten notes.

"Hegel's Theory of Positivity: An Application to Two Quaker Sects", 1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mark Webster's academic paper applies Hegel's theory of positivist Christian religions to two sects of Quakers, which Webster calls the Evangelical Friends and the Liberal Friends, and which Webster sees as the two least positivist Quaker groups. In the paper, Webster describes Hegel's theory of positivity, examines the history of Quakers through this theory, applies the theory to the two Quaker sects, and examines how different degrees of positivity in the two groups affected their reactions to the Vietnam War.

Abstract:: Daisy Newman's novel, "Indian Summer of the Heart," is the sequel to "I take thee, Serenity," and focuses on two entwined love stories. The first story is that of the continuing story of Peter and Serenity Holland, married at the end of the earlier book, as they face the difficult stresses of building two careers while also trying to meet the needs of Ross, their little boy. The other love story is that of Oliver Otis, a 78 year old widower, and Peter and Serenity's mentor, and Loveday Mead, who has come to the little Quaker village of Kendal. Both stories focus on the difficulties that stem from the pressures of modern life and the effect of the influence of Quakerism on the lives of the characters.

"Members of the Prison Society: Biographical Vignettes", 1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of the two volume manuscript by Peter P. and Elizabeth W. Jonitis, entitled "Memoirs of the Prison Society: Biographical Vignettes of the Managers of the Philadelphia Society for Assisting Distressed Prisoners and the Members of the Philadelphia Society for Alleviating the Miseries of Public Prisons, 1787-1830." The biographical sketches were compiled in order to determine how many of the 344 members of the organizations were Quakers, so as to study Quaker contributions to early prison reform in the United States.
