Khalil A. Totah and Eva Marshall Totah papers, 1896-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The papers revolve around three topics and provide a picture of Quakers in Palestine in the 20th century: Khalil A. Totah, his second wife, Eva Marshall Totah and his first wife, Ermina Jones Totah. Khalil Totah discusses the situation in Palestine, primarily in the 1930s, and speaks of his own life and aspirations, as when he became a Quaker minister. His diaries expand the picture, adding information about Friends Boys School in Ramallah (Palestine) and his understanding of the political situation, again primarily in the 1930s. The photographs add the dimension of geography, placing Totah at Oak Grove Seminary, Clark College, the Institute of Arab American Affairs, and at the Friends School in Ramallah. The papers of Ermina Jones Totah portray an earnest and dedicated teacher and wife, but carry little detail. Eva Marshall Totah has the largest quantity of correspondence, primarily 1920s and 1930s. "Among the Red Indians", Undated.

Abstract:
Henry Stanley Newman's "Among the Red Indians" provides a narrative of Newman's travels among Native Americans west of the Mississippi River in 1889. The manuscript was prepared for Mary S. Kimber when she was proposing to write a book on the work that American Friends did with indigenous peoples, which was published in 1917 and entitled "Friends and the Indians." Newman's manuscript was never published. The manuscript describes the various settlements that Newman and his wife visited on their travels, the nations they interacted ith, including the Muscogee, and the landscape.

Abstract:
Daisy Newman's novel, "Indian Summer of the Heart," is the sequel to "I take thee, Serenity," and focuses on two entwined love stories. The first story is that of the continuing story of Peter and Serenity Holland, married at the end of the earlier book, as they face the difficult stresses of building two careers while also trying to meet the needs of Ross, their little boy. The other love story is that of Oliver Otis, a 78 year old widower, and Peter and Serenity's mentor, and Loveday Mead, who has come to the little Quaker village of Kendal. Both stories focus on the difficulties that stem from the pressures of modern life and the effect of the influence of Quakerism on the lives of the characters.
