The volume describes Isaac Coates, Joshua Sharpless, and John Pierce's travel to Native American reservations on behalf of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Indian Committee, and the work they did while there.

Abstract:: Henry Stanley Newman's "Among the Red Indians" provides a narrative of Newman's travels among Native Americans west of the Mississippi River in 1889. The manuscript was prepared for Mary S. Kimber when she was proposing to write a book on the work that American Friends did with indigenous peoples, which was published in 1917 and entitled "Friends and the Indians." Newman's manuscript was never published. The manuscript describes the various settlements that Newman and his wife visited on their travels, the nations they interacted ith, including the Muscogee, and the landscape.

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript "The Code of Handsome Lake, the Seneca Prophet," published by the Education Department Bulletin of the New York State Museum. Handsome Lake's 'Code' attempted to simplify the spiritual practices of the Iroquois, preaching temperance, a strict moral code, and self-determination. It also contains the prophecies of Handsome Lake, who believed the world would end (by fire) in the year 2100. The manuscript also contains descriptions of Iroquois religious rituals and myths at the turn of the 20th century.
