Abstract:: The materials in this collection almost entirely center around the 1911 Delhi Durbar, to which Sir Richard Harington and his wife, Lady Selina Harington, were invited. It contains informational materials related to the Durbar and Delhi, postcards, and photographs of the Haringtons, along with some limited peripheral ephemera.

John F. Ballier papers, circa 1831-1892

Abstract:: The collection primarily includes records related to the Civil War service of John F. Ballier, including correspondence, guard reports, muster rolls, military orders, and other papers pertaining to the 21st and the 98th Regiments of Pennsylvania Volunteers, which Ballier commanded. Other papers of Ballier include a handwritten copy of a resolution of the National Guard of Pennsylvania, Third Regiment, acknowledging Ballier's retirement in 1876; and a personal scrapbook of correspondence, memorabilia, ephemera, and clippings documenting his Civil War service as well as other events throughout his life. Many items in the scrapbook relate to German-American societies and festivities in Philadelphia. Also included are records of discharges and payments to veterans of regiments in Pennsylvania and in other states; and a volume entitled Pennsylvania Militia Legion cashbook.

E. Sculley Bradley papers, 1876-1970 (inclusive) 1944-1962 (bulk)

Abstract:: Edward Sculley Bradley (1897-1987) was a scholar, author, educator, and administrator at the University of Pennsylvania. He was a prolific writer and editor, serving as editor of the General Magazine and History Chronicle, Philadelphia, 1945-1956. He published biographies of literary figures George Henry Boker and Henry Charles Lea, as well as editions of works by Mark Twain, Stephen Crane, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Walt Whitman. Bradley was considered an international expert on Whitman, editing several important editions of the poet's Leaves of Grass. The Sculley Bradley papers include his personal and professional correspondence dating from 1923 to 1962, material from several literary censorship cases for which he testified, corrected drafts of his manuscripts for the Comprehensive Reader's Edition, Norton Critical Edition, and Variorum edition of Leaves of Grass, ephemera and graphics associated with Walt Whitman, and a small amount of material on other authors.

Fowler and Wells phrenological character readings, ephemera, and printed material, 1840-1910 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains materials related to the study and practice of phrenology, specifically as espoused by American phrenologists Orson Squire Fowler, Lorenzo Niles Fowler, Charlotte Fowler Wells, Lydia Folger Fowler, and Samuel Roberts Wells, who together make up the company Fowler and Wells. Fowler and Wells was the most prolific disseminator of phrenological materials throughout the nineteenth century. The materials in this collection range from extended, personal analyses of individuals, to advertisements and ephemera about phrenological publications, to original editions of the American Phrenological Journal.

Tuxbury family travel ephemera, 1897-1926 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Tuxbury family, including Alfred C. Tuxbury (1844-1913), his wife Luna Arabella Bosworth (1844-1920), and their three daughters, Edith Eloise (1870-1953), Alice Bosworth (1874-1944), and Luna Elizabeth (1876-1963) traveled abroad on several occasions, in 1897, 1904, and 1927. In 1897, Alfred and Edith traveled around the Mediterranean Sea, to Jerusalem, Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, and Italy before traveling to England, presumably for the return voyage. In 1904, Alice and Luna Elizabeth were members of the "Palestine Tour," a travel-study class through the University of Chicago. In 1926, Luna Elizabeth traveled with a Miss Brittain to Japan, Hong Kong, Burma (now Myanmar), and India. This collection consists of travel ephemera (largely receipts) from at least these three trips taken by the Tuxbury family.
