Alvin and Frankie Rubinstein travel diaries and correspondence, 1920-2002 (inclusive) 1958-2000 (bulk)

Abstract:: Alvin Z. Rubinstein (1927-2001) was a political scientist and international relations scholar, who was best known for his studies of the foreign relations of the former Soviet Union and Russia. Frankie Rubinstein (1918-2019) was an English teacher who taught at Philadelphia's Overbrook High School and at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Together, from 1960 to 2000, the married couple travelled extensively to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. While their travels were motivated chiefly by Alvin Rubinstein's research and academic work as a political scientist, the majority of the correspondence and other material reflect Frankie's voice and life experience. However, her husband Alvin did write some correspondence and the collection also includes several journals in which he took extensive notes on trips to Yugoslavia and Moscow in the 1960s.

Libyan photograph album, 1937

Abstract:: This album contains 98 black and white photographs taken during a trip to Libya in 1937 by an anonymous photographer, who likely was German or Italian. The photographs are of scenes from around Libya, such as the Hotel Albergo Mehari, a camel market, Tripoli Castle, a coastal oasis, a Bedouin village, markets and bazars. Prominent locations shown include, Tripoli, Sabratha, Leptis Magna, Zliten, and Yefren. Additionally, photographs of people, including children, locals, officials, and soldiers can be found throughout.

Abstract:: This photograph album was probably created by a British subject traveling (or possibly living) in Karachi, in what is now Pakistan. For the most part, these beautiful photographs which were carefully mounted and captioned appear to be travel photographs, although the time frame of the album, dating from 1930 to 1935, indicates the photographer and compiler was in the country for longer than a mere visit. The album appears to cover areas of what is now Pakistan and northern India, with a focus on Karachi, Port Said, Sandspit, New Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, Seringapatam, and Sivasamudram. Photographs focus largely on urban and scenic vistas, but the photographer also documents the people of India.

Harold A. Budke World War II photograph album of India, 1945-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Captain Harold A. Budke was a medic in the United States Army, posted in Calcutta from 1945 to 1946. The photographs in his album document his experiences from his trip to Calcutta, to his service with the United States Army Dispensary, to his day-to-day experiences in the city, and to his work preparing the U.S.S. Marine Panther to transport GI's and patients from India in early 1946.

Abstract:: Robert and Barbara Barlow (Bob and Babs) traveled to India from 1943 to 1945. It is unclear from the volume if the Barlows were visiting India as a result of service during World War II or if they were traveling for pleasure. The album, titled "Street Scenes in India" provides no hints to who the Barlows were or why they were in India, but contains photographs of the various sights (both architectural and cultural) found during their stay.
