- Abstract:
- Procès de Rennes photograph album documents the August 1899 re-trial of Captain Alfred Dreyfus (1859-1935), a French military officer who was falsely accused of treason and deported to Devil's Island in 1895. The re-trial was a sensationalist event that resulted in Dreyfus's second conviction. Following international outrage, Dreyfus was pardoned in September, 1899. The album contains candid photographs of Rennes street scenes with particular focus on the prison and the crowds, police, and military awaiting verdicts. There are also a number of clipped images from publications, largely portraits of officials involved in the trial.
