Abstract:: This collection consists of about 170 photographs, placed in an album, taken in India between 1930 and 1934 by an unidentified British soldier. Though the soldier is unknown, it is almost certain that he served in the Royal Fusiliers. The photographs in the album largely depict the every day life of British soldiers and their social activities, as well as providing evidence of British interest in Indian life and customs.

Second Lancers photograph album, 1909-1913 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Second Lancers, established in 1809 by William Linnaeus Gardner (1770-1835), was a cavalry regiment in the British Indian Army. It is probable that the creator of this album was a British or Indian officer who served with the Second Lancers between 1909 and 1913. For the most part, military life is not documented--instead the volume consists of formal portraits of British and Indian soldiers; candid photographs of soldiers; portraits of horses; and photographs of a trip to England, equine sports in India (including racing and polo), and a trip to Delhi for the Delhi Durbar held in December 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India.

Photograph album by a British engineer in Pakistan, 1951-1952 (inclusive)

Extent:: 1 volume
Abstract:: This photograph album was kept by a British engineer working on a hydroelectric project that included building dams at Warsak and Kurram Garhi, North-West Frontier Province, Pakistan. During a five-month period from 1951 to 1952 the engineer recorded work sites, engineers, landscapes, and street scenes. There are also images from his stops in Cyprus and Rome on his return trip to London.

Ronald Beck scrapbook of Royal Air Force service and travel memorabilia, 1942-1969 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George Ronald Kinloch Beck (1907-1993) was an officer in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War. This scrapbook contains about 20 pages of photographs, correspondence, clippings, and other memorabilia that documents his military service from 1942 to 1945. Another 49 pages of photographs, photographic post cards, maps, itineraries, and brochures, document trips to Switzerland, France, Italy, Spain, and Africa, from 1955 to 1969.

Richard Gimbel photograph album of Philadelphia and Atlantic City, 1911-1913 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Richard Louis Gimbel (1898-1970) was vice president of Gimbel Brothers, an officer in the United States Air Force, and a book collector. This photograph album documents, to a small degree, his life from 1911 to 1913, through 56 black and white photographs, numbered and captioned by Gimbel. The volume contains images of his extended family in Atlantic City; his classmates and friends at the School of Practice of the School of Pedagogy; events in Philadelphia such as the New Years Day parade, fires in the city, and landmark buildings; and a baseball game that probably took place in Philmont, Pennsylvania.

Abstract:: A handwritten diary, by J. H. Slack of Philadelphia. The volume, probably bound by Slack, was written in 1858 and recounted his trip to England in spring an summer of 1856. Slack stated in the preface of the diary " [I] wrote with a double purpose, first as a souvenir of my voyage for my own gratification, and secondly to afford pleasure to my large circle of friends to whom my private journal would be inaccessible."

Ernest Rudolph Gunther photograph album of India, 1895-1896 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection is composed of a photograph album containing photographs of various regions of India. The cover lists the following dates and cities: 1895-1896, Bombay, Ahmedabad, Jeypore, Amber, Delhi, Agra, Fatipur, Benares, Calcutta, Darjeeling and Madras. A few of the photos capture individuals participating in events such as the tiger hunt or the elephant ride but the majority of the photographs are of landscapes. Most of the photos are large (around 7x10 inches) and are of high artistic quality. Some of the photographs are labelled but most are not. The bookplate on the first page indicates the album was at least owned, and probably compiled, by Ernest Rudolph Gunther.
