Abstract:: Richard Harding Davis, 1864-1916, was a student at Lehigh University from 1882-1884. During his stay he wrote many novels and short stories and was a prominent war correspondent during the Spanish-American War (1898). The documents here include letters, telegrams and notes, mostly written by Davis. It is predominantly letters to his publisher, J. Henry Harper, at Harper and Brothers, but also includes other letters to Raymond H. Walters, Lehigh University, a few letters from Rebecca Harding Davis to Richard Watson Gilder, and letters and telegrams from various persons in Athens, Ga. to J. Henry Harper regarding an incident involving Davis there in 1895.

Abstract:: This collection is comprised of over 6,500 photographs and negatives depicting testing and related activities in the Fritz Engineering Laboratory on the campus of Lehigh University. The bulk of the collection depicts testing conducted during the mid-to-late 1950s into the early 1960s. Additionally, the collection includes graphs and diagrams of testing results, some images from Lab related events, and some images of structures that illustrate design elements or problems. All materials are in black and white.

Abstract:: The Birkinbine Engineering Company got its start through Henry P. M. Birkinbine. His son, John, gained early engineering experience through various water supply projects in and around Philadelphia; this experience later helped direct the Birkinbine Engineering Company’s involvement in many water-related projects around the country in the late 19th century as part of the improved public sanitation initiatives. The Birkinbine firm also specialized in mining engineering, both in the United States and Mexico. John also had a firm grounding in mechanical engineering through his work in the Weimer Machine Works in Lebanon, Pennsylvania. John’s interest in manufacturing pig iron from charcoal, combined with his knowledge of hydraulics, catalyzed his concern for the condition of forests in Pennsylvania and he became one of the founders of the Pennsylvania Forestry Association.
