Abstract:: S.A. Wheeler may have been a Scottish member of the British Air Force posted in India during World War II. This collection is composed of two volumes of photos taken in India between 1942 and 1945, likely by S.A. Wheeler. A majority of the photographs capture local scenes of the market, the landscape and the people, mostly in Lahore and Dehli but also on trips he took in the region. The volumes also contain some newspaper clippings, stamps, paper money and other mementos.

Abstract:: The Second Lancers, established in 1809 by William Linnaeus Gardner (1770-1835), was a cavalry regiment in the British Indian Army. It is probable that the creator of this album was a British or Indian officer who served with the Second Lancers between 1909 and 1913. For the most part, military life is not documented--instead the volume consists of formal portraits of British and Indian soldiers; candid photographs of soldiers; portraits of horses; and photographs of a trip to England, equine sports in India (including racing and polo), and a trip to Delhi for the Delhi Durbar held in December 1911 to commemorate the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress of India.

Abstract:: This collection is composed of 45 photographs in a leather bound and engraved album which includes substantial interior design elements, specifically 16 color plates by R. Caton Woodville. The album itself is entitled "Army & Navy Album" and was published in Germany. The subjects of the photographs are all individuals, in formal, studio settings. A majority are in military dress, some in every day outfits. There does not appear to be continuity in the photos and little duplication in the subjects. It's likely the photos were taken in the last several decades of the 1800s, around the time of the printing of the album itself, though no dates are recorded in the album.
