Abstract:: John George Repplier McElroy (1842-1890), an alumnus of the University of Pennsylvania (class of 1862), is best known as a professor of Greek, History, and Rhetoric at his alma mater. This collection is primarily composed of lecture notes by John George Repplier McElroy (1842-1890); however it also includes McElroy's notes on his readings of Chaucer and his manuscript of Readings from the Electra of Socrates.

Benjamin Woolsey Dwight and Francis E. Dwight Papers, 1801-1882 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Between 1801 and 1803 Benjamin Woolsey Dwight studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he also practiced at Pennsylvania Hospital, and at Columbia College in New York. Francis E. Dwight was the grandson of Benjamin Woolsey Dwight. In 1882 he took medical instructions at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University in New York, New York. The Benjamin Woolsey Dwight and Francis E. Dwight Papers contain material relating to their medical education - mainly notebooks for lectures attended, and admission cards for Benjamin Woolsey Dwight.

Louise A. K. S. Clappe papers, circa 1860s-1890s (inclusive)

Abstract:: Louise A. K. S. Clappe (also known as Louise Amelia Knapp Smith Clappe and "Dame Shirley") was an author and an educator, best known for her published "Shirley Letters, which describe her experiences in gold mining camps and towns in California from 1851 to 1852. This collection documents Clappe's later career as a teacher and lecturer in San Francisco, New York City, and New Jersey. While much of the material in this collection cannot be definitively dated, it appears that most was created from the mid 1860s through the 1890s.

Abstract:: Reverend S. M. Woodbridge (1819-1905) was an American clergyman, theologian, author and professor who taught Reverend Henry Ward at the New Brunswick Theological Seminary. These notes were taken by Ward during Woodbridge's lectures on church history.

John L. Stewart papers, 1806-1927 (inclusive) 1890-1927 (bulk)

Abstract:: This collection contains the papers of John L. Stewart, an educator and Public Service Commissioner for the state of Pennsylvania. Ranging in date from 1890 to 1927 (with one 1806 newspaper) these letters, newspaper clippings, notes and pamphlets outline the progression of Stewart's career from principal of the Northeast Manual Training School to professor at, and eventually president of, Lehigh University. Documents concerning a 1926 Pennsylvania Supreme Court case that questioned legality of Stewart's position on the Public Service Commission are included in this collection, as are many letters of condolence received by Stewart's wife upon his death.

Edward Goodfellow Papers, 1845-1897 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Edward Goodfellow graduated from the University of Pennsylvania from with an A.B. in 1848 and an A.M. in 1851, after which he began his career with the U. S. Coast and Geoditc Survey. The Edward Goodfellow Papers are a small collection of items related to his association with the University and work with the Coast Survey.
