Abstract:: This collection (1797-1851) contains notebooks kept by three members of the Archer family, a prominent and politically active family of medical doctors based in Harford County, Maryland. The first file contains John Archer Jr.'s notes on materia medica lectures delivered by Benjamin Barton and given at the University of Pennsylvania in 1797 and 1798. A commonplace book (1830-1832) maintained by Henry Wilson Archer, which contains excerpts mostly from history books and poems is the second file. Also included in the collection is an account book (1841-1851) wherein the wheat purchases of Robert Harris Archer were recorded.

Abstract:: Dr. John Clarke (1760-1850) was an obstetric physician who lectured on midwifery and the diseases of women and children at St. Bartholomew's Hospital and in his home at No. 1, New Burlington Street, in London. This volume contains notes from his lectures, recorded by Samuel Head (circa 1773-1837), a Canadian physician studying in England from 1802 to 1803. These notes provide a glimpse into the education of 18th to early 19th century physicians, who, through the professionalization of the field, became increasingly involved in overseeing pregnancy and childbirth, and taking on the role of "man-midwife."

Abstract:: The Logan family was prominent in Philadelphia from the start of the province, serving the people in many capacities, including political, medical and literary. This is a collection of manuscripts obtained by the Library Company of Philadelphia that relates to the Logan family. The collection includes papers of the Logan family members Albanus Charles, Algernon Sydney, Deborah Norris, William Jr., and James as well as family materials collected by Frances A. Logan and William Logan Fox. The collection dates from 1684 to 1925 and consists of family papers, correspondence, diaries, writings, medical texts, lecture notes, financial records, poetry, visiting cards, and invitations.

Abstract:: Nathaniel Chapman (1780-1853) was an American physician, medical student, and later, professor at the University of Pennsylvania. This collection consists of manuscript notes, taken by students from 1813 to 1833 at the University of Pennsylvania, on Chapman's lectures covering the topics of theory and practice of medicine, the practice of physic, and pathology.

Abstract:: Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1789-1855) was an American doctor and veteran who earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811 and practiced medicine in Maryland. This collection consists of 11 volumes plus 30 leaves of lecture notes taken by John Hanson Briscoe while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department, from 1808 to 1811. Included are lecture notes from courses taught by Benjamin Rush on therapeutics, as well as courses taught by Benjamin Smith Barton, Philip Syng Physick, John Redman Coxe and others.

Abstract:: Benjamin Smith Barton was a naturalist, botanist, and a professor of natural history, botany, and materia medica at the University of Pennsylvania from 1789 to 1813, succeeding Benjamin Rush as professor of medicine. This collection consists of lecture notes taken by four different University of Pennsylvania medical students in Benjamin Smith Barton's materia medica course.

Abstract:: The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. The other Rush family members are represented in a very limited manner.
