Abstract:

Correspondence, letter books, diaries, scrapbooks, account books, deeds, marriage certificates, genealogical material, and miscellaneous manuscript and printed items of, or about, Thomas Wistar Brown (1826-1916), his father Moses Brown (1793-1878), his mother Mary (Wistar) Brown (b. 1807), his brother Moses Brown (b. 1829), his wife Mary (Farnum) Brown, his son John Farnum Brown (1873-1894) and others. Under correspondence, there are four letters from Eliza Paul (Kirkbride) Gurney to Elizabeth W. Wistar. Included under miscellaneous manuscripts are extracts from the Minutes of Dover [N.H.] Monthly Meeting, 1701/2-1785, the will of William Brown of Dover, N.H., 4mo. 19 1833, and a poem by Joseph John Gurney, 1838. The collection also contains the Wistar Family tree.

Some of these families were Quaker, including Coates, Emlen and Vaux; others had some Quaker family members, including Cresson, other families, including Gumbes and Wetherill, did not remain Quaker.

Reinhardt, Hawley and Hewes family papers, 1762-1955 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Reinhardt, Hawley, Hewes and Meredith families are tied together through marriage and their Quaker faith across multiple generations. William Dell Reinhardt, a University of Pennsylvania graduate and doctor, married Rebecca Hawley, a teacher. They had six children: Jesse Hawley Reinhardt, Mary Bailey Reinhardt, Esther Meredith Reinhardt, Lydia Ludwig Reinhardt, Elizabeth Christina Reinhardt, and David Jones Reinhardt. David Jones Reinhardt married Anna Margaret Hewes in 1896. These individuals created the bulk of the material contained within this collection. This collection consists of correspondence; account books; certificates; diaries and household information lists; friendship books; land and insurance records; marriage certificates; miscellaneous family records; wills and estates; genealogical research; photographs; Quaker tracts and poetry; newspaper clippings; and Acts of the Assembly of the Province of Pennsylvania. Dixon family papers, 1842-1893 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Edward H. Dixon (1808-1880) was a New York City surgeon. Dixon earned his M.D. from Rutgers Medical College in 1829 or 1830, and then studied material medica, theory and practice, and therapeutics under Dr. John Francis; and surgery under Dr. Alexander Mott. Afterwards, Dixon accepted positions at the Deaf and Dumb Asylum and House of Refuge. Later, he opened his own practice as a consulting surgeon, as well as a private surgical hospital. He married his wife, Sarah S. Hart, in 1833, and they had one daughter, Julia, in 1836. Julia married Elias G. Brown in 1857, and they had several children. Sarah (Hart) Dixon died in 1883, and Julia (Dixon) Brown around 1893. The Dixon family papers span from 1842 to 1893 (although the bulk of material dates from the 1860s to the 1880s), and document the everyday life of women living in the late 19th-century, as well as the relationships between a grandfather and his grandchildren. The Knight family was a Quaker family from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. The collection contains chiefly legal and business papers of Jacob P. Tyson, his wife, Mary B. Michener Tyson, and others. Mary Williams Shoemaker (1861-1953) was a Quaker philanthropist from Germantown, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Franklin and Mary (Williams) Shoemaker. The collection contains chiefly journals (1934-1945) and correspondence (1914-1953) relating to Shoemaker's support of Quaker historical, educational, and social service agencies; together with correspondence of her brother, Thomas Howard Shoemaker (1851-1936), relating to his historical interests and civic activities. David Hosack (1769-1835) was an American physician, botanist, educator, and graduate of Princeton University (Class of 1789). Many of the papers concern land in the Lackawanna River valley of Luzerne County, Pennsylvania.

David Lynch (1793-1860) was an active member of the Democratic Party in Pennsylvania in the mid-19th century and a friend and supporter of President James Buchanan. The bulk of this collection is comprised of Lynch's correspondence with other politically active Pennsylvanians and includes letters between Lynch and Buchanan. Also included are personal papers, pamphlets, religious ephemera, newspaper clippings, photos, and engravings.
