Abstract:: The Office of Advancement of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was formed in 2015 by the merging of two departments: the Communications Department and the Development Department, which were created in 1988 and 1987, respectively. The functions of the Office of Advancement include all aspects of fundraising; public relations for the entire College; and administration of the Fellowship and Friends of the Mütter, a membership program open to the public which supports the Mütter Museum. The Records of the Offices of Communication and Development date from 1977 to 1999 and consist of reports, minutes, and committee files; fellowship information, including membership packets; grants, including the capital campaign the New Century Fund; correspondence; press releases and newsclippings; and material regarding the Bicentennial Symposium in 1987.

Records of Continuing Medical Education Programs, 1973-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:: During the 1970s, there was an emphasis on continuing medical education (CME) for practicing licensed medical doctors. Lifetime licenses to practice medicine were being replaced by limited time licenses that required renewal. In order to renew their state issued medical licenses, doctors were required to obtain continuing education credits. Beginning in 1974, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia offered symposiums, distance education programs, courses in Philadelphia, and additional programs. These programs include PREP, PREP CV, and the Emergency Medicine program. The College's CME programs ended in 1980 and 1981. The Records of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia Continuing Education Programs date from 1973 to 1981 and consist of correspondence and records pertaining to continuing education programs, including the Basic Science Section, FOCUS, College Night, PREP, PREP CV, CME, Emergency Medicine, and other programs. Abstract:: This collection contains a small amount of Robert Campbell's correspondence, 1978-1980, from his tenure as President of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Robert E. Campbell was born in 1931. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1957 and specialized in diagnostic radiology. In 1975, Campbell was elected a Fellow of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, and served as its President from 2006 to 2008.

Abstract:: The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. This collection of the records of the Mütter Museum span the years 1969 to 2009, although the bulk of the material dates from 1999 through 2006. The records document the educational programs of the Museum, including portrait tours, lesson plans, and the grants used to support them; two major exhibitions, "Only One Man Died" and "The Medical World of Benjamin Franklin;" and the renovations made to the Museum during the 1980s and early 2000s. Abstract:: The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Abstract:: In 2010, the Office of Operations was organized to oversee hospitality, front of house and receptionist, visitor services, hall and grounds, renovations, security, and the parking lot. Previously, at least as far back as 1991, the management of facilities and special events fell under the responsibilities of the Office of Institutional Advancement (as of 2015, merged with Office of Development and External Affairs and Office of Communications into the Office of Advancement). While the Office of Operations was not organized until 2010, much of the work fell under its direct predecessor, the Office of Programs and Internal Services, or was managed under the current (2019) Director of Operations, Antonia Oberthaler. Abstract:: The Records of the Committee on Fellowship span the years 1983 to 1892, although the bulk of the material dates from 1974 to 1978. Included in the collection are three volumes of list of Fellows and deceased Fellows, dating from 1973 to 1892, and 1918 to 1979. Correspondence and reports from meetings and regarding the status are Fellows date from 1949 to 1978. The Committee on Fellowship became a standing Committee of the College of Physicians in 1972. The by-laws of this year state that the Committee on Fellowship "shall seek candidates for Fellowship and help process their nominations" and "investigate every candidate for Fellowship thoroughly".

Abstract:: Established in 1994, the Section on Public Health and Preventive Medicine creates a forum for deliberation of relevant issues in public health, and provides information for the development of health policy. The Section brings together public health professionals from all across the region to study public health problems and assess potential responses. The Records of the Section of Public Health and Preventive Medicine (SPHPM) document the 1994 establishment and later activities of the Section for during its first 15 years of existence, up to 2010, through meeting minutes, correspondence, membership information, and programming. This collection is a rich resource for those interested in the programming for and advocacy of a non-profit institution related to public health issues. Researchers should note that the media found in this collection (cassette tapes) are not able to be played as the Library does not have the required hardware.

Abstract:: The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Records of the Section on Medical History III span the years 1966 to 2004, and consist of correspondence, annual reports, lecture announcements, speaker information, and Executive Committee minutes. Abstract:: The Section on Medicine & the Arts was established on April 26, 1994, by approval of the College Council. The first informational meeting was held on April 20, 1995. As of 2019, the Section on Medicine & the Arts is still an active section. Its programs explore and nurture a more humanistic understanding of health, illness and medicine through the literary, visual and performing arts. The Records of the Section on Medicine & the Arts span the years 1982 through 2006, although the most of the material dates from 1993 to 2000. The collection is divided into three series, and includes meeting minutes of the Section's Executive Committee, lecture programs, and background information on the formation of the Section. Also included is a file relating to the Physicians Arts Festival, held on May 5, 1984, which may have encouraged the formation of the Section.
