Abstract:: Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1789-1855) was an American doctor and veteran who earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811 and practiced medicine in Maryland. This collection consists of 11 volumes plus 30 leaves of lecture notes taken by John Hanson Briscoe while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department, from 1808 to 1811. Included are lecture notes from courses taught by Benjamin Rush on therapeutics, as well as courses taught by Benjamin Smith Barton, Philip Syng Physick, John Redman Coxe and others.

Abstract:: Materials, including administrative records and minutes; staff information; project files; publications; slides and audio recordings from presentations and events; and reference materials. Collection documents the activities of a coordinating committee created by the Southeastern Region of the Pennsylvania Department of Health to maintain communication between government agencies and local women's activist organizations focusing on health issues and spun off as an independent organization in 1978. Also includes information on the professional activities of the committee's director, JoAnne Fischer, who was special consultant to the governor on women and health.

Abstract:: The records of the Medical Committee for Human Rights (MCHR) include minutes and other administrative records; correspondence and other papers of members; financial records; records of field work and other programs; subsidiary groups; events; publications; and publicity. Arising in conjunction with the civil rights movement, the MCHR was an organization of doctors, nurses, and other health workers dedicated to advancing health among minority groups and equality in the health industry. Working in both southern and northern states, the MCHR also fought for national health insurance, the rights of prisoners, and the end of the Vietnam War.

Maternity Care Coalition records, 1960-2009 (inclusive) 1980-2007 (bulk)

Abstract:: The business records of the Maternity Care Coalition (MCC), a Philadelphia-based organization devoted to preventing infant mortality. Founded in 1980, the Maternity Care Coalition continued to operate at the time of the donation in 2009. The bulk of the materials comprise community outreach and client education materials, research materials, and publications. Also present within the collection are newspaper clippings, a number of media appearances captured on VHS, reel-to-reel, and audio cassettes, as well as a series of photographs that span the years 1985 to 2005.

Irena Koprowska collection on American Cancer Society-Veterans Administration lung cancer screening study, 1958-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Irena Grasberg Koprowska (born 1917) worked in pathology and participated in a study on the early detection and diagnosis of lung cancer: The American Cancer Society-Veterans Administration Cooperative Study for the Evaluation of Radiologic and Sputum Cytologic Screening in the Early Detection of Lung Cancer while working at Cornell University. The Irena Koprowska collection on American Cancer Society-Veterans Administration Lung Cancer Screening Study consists of correspondence, data sheets, supporting notes, and reports dating from 1958 to 1964. The collection also includes microscope slides and photographic prints of the microscope slides. The material focuses on the lung cancer screening study conducted from 1958 to 1868 by Dr. Irena Koprowska, in conjunction with Dr. George Papanicolaou’s laboratory at Cornell, where she worked before coming to Hahnemann Medical College. Bradford collection of biographies of Homoeopathic Physicians, 1868-1918 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Dr. Thomas L. Bradford (1847-1918) was a practicing homeopathic physician in Maine, Europe and Philadelphia. While practicing and teaching in Philadelphia he served as curator for the Hahnemann Medical College and Hospital of Philadelphia. From 1896 to 1916, he collected, organized and maintained material for 35 scrapbooks of biographical information about homeopathic physicians.

Abstract:: Anny Elston (1895-1975), a German born and trained pediatrician, immigrated to the United States in 1941 due to the "Racial Laws" in Nazi Germany. After obtaining her New York State Medical License in 1942, she began practicing medicine in New York City until retiring in 1972. The Anny Elston papers include information regarding Dr. Elston's medical credentials and continuing education, her medical practice in New York City, and patient records.

Dr. Daniel and Eleanor Albert collection of medical receipts, 1836-1869 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection of medical receipts includes billheads and receipts documenting a selection of the pharmaceutical offerings available to Americans in the mid nineteenth century. The bulk of the material is connected to P. Whitin and Sons, later renamed P. W. Dudley and Co., a company which manufactured textiles and machinery in Massachusetts during the nineteenth century. The company bought products from over forty retail establishments and dealers of health, hygiene, and other household chemicals and goods, probably to be sold at the company store.

Abstract:: The Dr. Daniel and Eleanor Albert collection of ophthalmology material (1596-2000, undated) presents the historical transformations of eye care and ocular medicine, with a particular emphasis on the field in the nineteenth century. While the majority of materials in this collection relate to ophthalmology, some pertain more broadly to medicine or to American history. In addition to the historical medical documents, this collection includes dozens of pairs of antique spectacles and over one hundred ophthalmoscopes.
