Abstract:: Between 1895 and 1901, William Furness, III., Alfred C. Harrison, Jr., and Hiram M. Hiller made a series of extended trips to Oceania, South and Southeast Asia, and East Asia. Furness, Harrison, and Hiller all donated or sold substantial collections of ethnographic, archaeological, and skeletal material acquired on the voyages to the Penn Museum. The Furness, Harrison, and Hiller collections, particularly those from Oceania, are extensive and reasonably well-documented for their time.

Abstract:: Cyrus Adler was a prominent Jewish scholar and communal builder. Born in 1863, he had a tremendous role in shaping much of Jewish America by the time of his death in 1940. The collection contains Dr. Adler's business correspondence and personal papers and spans much of his multi-faceted career. It also contains many papers connected to the formation and day-to-day business of the Dropsie College for Hebrew and Cognate Learning. Abstract:: Isaac Baer Levinsohn (1788-1860) was a Russian-Hebrew scholar and writer who is considered a founder of the Russian Haskalah (enlightenment). This collection consists of thirty-seven letters and/or documents (probably intended for specific recipients) written by Isaac Baer Levinsohn to notable Russian Jews about a wide range of issues including his published works Bet Yehudah and Te'udah be-Yisrael.

Abstract:: Isaac Leeser (1806-1868) was a rabbi, educator, writer, translator, editor and publisher; and proposed, founded, or led many significant civic, religious, and charitable institutions. This collection consists of letters, largely written to or from Isacc Leeser, that bear witness to Leeser's efforts to build the infrastructure of organized Jewish life in an English-speaking environment.

Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company letter book, 1864-1865 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Oversized volume containing copies of the outgoing correspondence from the commerical shipping company, Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O Company). The letters provide a record of the day-to-day operations of the company from 1864 to 1865.

Joseph Henry collection, 1831-1872 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joseph Henry (1797-1878) was an American scientist who served as the first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. One of the most highly-regarded American scientists during his lifetime, he is known for his pioneering work on electromagnetism. The collection is comprised of correspondences between Henry and his colleagues in the scientific and academic communities. Subjects range from a letter of recommendation for the appointment of a friend to the faculty of William and Mary College to administrative affairs.

Abstract:: Charles Mulford Robinson (1869-1917) was a newspaper editor, author, and professor celebrated as one of the United States' first urban planners and early proponents of the "City Beautiful" movement. This collection features several of his urban improvement reports delivered to communities which solicited his services as a "civic advisor," as well as the personal correspondence of him and his wife Eliza; newspaper clippings about his life, death, and activities; scrapbooks; poems, prose-pieces, hymns, and plays composed by Robinson in his spare time; photographs; and other personal records from throughout his life.

Abstract:: The Clara and Rudolf Kirk collection of William Dean Howells material consists of literary and visual materials by or about William Dean Howells, an American author, playwright, and literary critic. It was compiled by Clara and Rudolf Kirk, who were scholars studying Howells, circa 1940-1963. The collection includes essays and reviews written by or about Howells, correspondence and newspaper clippings by or regarding Howells, six scrapbooks about Howells' life and career, and other miscellaneous materials.

Hugo Albert Rennert collection, 1892-1920 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Hugo Albert Rennert (1858-1927) was a professor of romance literature at the University of Pennsylvania, an author, and a philologist who focused his research on Spanish literature. This collection contains hand copied European manuscripts, probably used by Rennert in his research, letters written to Rennert by his fellow scholars of Spanish literature, and a hand copied dictionary of Spanish actors from 1560 to 1680 along with notes on the Spanish actors and theater companies from that time.
