Fritz and Karoline Solmitz papers, 1929-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Fritz Solmitz (1893-1933) was an early and outspoken leader in the opposition to Nazism, an editor of a Social Democratic newspaper in Lübeck and a member of the City council. Because of his active opposition to the Nazis, and probably because he was a Jew, he died of mistreatment in a German prison shortly after Hitler came to power. Karoline Somitz (1893-1966) was, like her husband, active in civic affairs. Much of the collection contains letters and photographs, some translated from German.

Richard Mead Atwater papers, 1862-1922 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Richard Mead Atwater (1844-1922) was the son of Stephen Atwater and Mary Weaver, both of whom were Quaker. This collection is comprised of Atwater's diary, 1862; letters concerning Brown University; club memberships and letters concerning the memberships and autobiographical remarks written in 1917 as well as an earlier biographical sketch.

Abstract:: In 1883, Quakers Albert Keith Smiley and his brother Daniel Smiley organized the first annual conference to discuss assistance to Native Americans at their estate at Lake Mohonk in New York state. These conferences were widely attended by specialists in various fields, as well as important officials. Only later were Native Americans represented. The concern to "uplift" was also directed at Filipino, Hawaiian, African American and Puerto Rican peoples, though attention at the conferences was primarily focused on Native Americans.

Elizabeth Gray Vining papers, 1897-1989 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Gray Vining (1902-1999) was an author of children's books and served as the tutor to the crown prince of Japan, Akihito, from 1946 to 1950. The collection consists of correspondence, materials regarding books authored by Vining, articles, lectures and addresses, photographs, and information documenting her and her family's lives.

Benjamin Swett letterbook, 1765-1806 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The first half of the volume contains business correspondence concerning merchant's orders and the status of shipments. The second half of the volume contains personal correspondence, chiefly letters from Benjamin Swett to Mary Howell Swett, his wife. Letters are addressed to William Johnson, Isaac Milnor, Harper & Hartshorne, John Wickman & Sons, Barclay & Sons, Richard Mayhew, Joseph Brown, Jonathon Cowpland, David Symour, Arnoll & Mayhew, Thomas Letchworth, George Dillwyn, Sally Hopkins, and John Smith.

John Greenleaf Whittier letterbook, 1842-1873 (inclusive)

Abstract:: John Greenleaf Whittier was an American Quaker poet and editor, as well as an involved abolitionist. He was a delegate to the Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, a member of the State Legislature in 1835, founded the antislavery Liberty party in 1840, and ran for Congress in 1842. Topics covered in Whittier's letterbook include news of health and family, as well as discussions of contributions to "The Non-Slaveholder" and discussions of English Friends.
