Abstract:: Ashley Bryan (1923-2022) was an artist and storyteller best known for his award-winning children's book illustrations with particular emphasis on African folktales and African-American spirituals. Bryan authored, illustrated, published, and distributed his first book in Kindergarten, later graduating from Cooper Union and Columbia University, being awarded a Fulbright to study at the University of Freiburg, before becoming a professor at Dartmouth College. The collection documents his lifelong devotion to the arts including sketchbooks, artwork, and especially materials relating to the publication process of over sixty book projects. There is also material relating to his professional engagements; certificates, awards, diplomas, and plaques relating to his many achievements; and personal and family materials, notebooks, photographs, greeting cards and postcards, school children thank you cards and artwork, and research files and ephemera. Alvin and Frankie Rubinstein travel diaries and correspondence, 1920-2002 (inclusive) 1958-2000 (bulk)

Abstract:: Alvin Z. Rubinstein (1927-2001) was a political scientist and international relations scholar, who was best known for his studies of the foreign relations of the former Soviet Union and Russia. Frankie Rubinstein (1918-2019) was an English teacher who taught at Philadelphia's Overbrook High School and at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. Together, from 1960 to 2000, the married couple travelled extensively to countries in Europe, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. While their travels were motivated chiefly by Alvin Rubinstein's research and academic work as a political scientist, the majority of the correspondence and other material reflect Frankie's voice and life experience. However, her husband Alvin did write some correspondence and the collection also includes several journals in which he took extensive notes on trips to Yugoslavia and Moscow in the 1960s.

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Records, 1855 - 2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Established in 1855, the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia was the first hospital in the United States to care exclusively for children, and was key in establishing the foundations of modern day pediatric medicine. Medical staff members at CHOP have been at the forefront of innovation for decades, and their work has had impacts which can be seen to this day, in the form of the Isolette Incubator, the Measles vaccine, and its participation in The Human Genome Project. The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Records (1855 to 2006) extensively documents the activities of the Public Relations and Planning and Development Departments from the early 1960’s to the early 1990’s. The bibliographies, published works, correspondence and interviews with several major figures in pediatric medicine, such as Doctors C. Abstract:: The Committee on College Collections of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1935. Over the years, the Committee on College Collections worked closely with the Committee on the Mutter Museum; by 1939, the same Fellows served on both committees. The Museum Council of Philadelphia is the oldest and one of the largest regional associations of museums in the United States. Gretchen Worden was an avid supporter of local, national, and international professional organizations. She spent her career at the Mütter Museum of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia and later joined the Museum Council of Philadelphia. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities, operations, and programs of various committees of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia and the Museum Council of Philadelphia, and span the years of 1932 to 2006. Abstract:: Arthur K. Asbury, Van Meter Professor of Neurology Emeritus, is one of the country's most noted neurologists, recognized for his clinical and experimental studies of peripheral neuropathies, particularly those related to chronic kidney failure, diabetes mellitus, and Guillain-Barré Syndrome. Asbury was born in 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He received his bachelor's degree in agriculture from the University of Kentucky in 1951, and went on to study at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, receiving his M.D. in 1958. His postgraduate training included an internship and residency in medicine, neurology, and neuropathology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and a teaching fellowship at Harvard Medical School. From 1963 to 1965 he held a research and clinical fellowship in neuropathology at MGH and a research fellowship in neuropathology at Harvard Medical School. Abstract:: The Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine (Wood Institute) was established in 1976 to promote to the scholarly community the rich historical resources of the College's historical library and the Mütter Museum. From its founding, the Wood Institute also took over printing and editorial duties of the College's journal, Transactions and Studies, which was published in 1793 and from 1844 to 2002. As of 2018, the Wood Institute sponsors conferences, occasional seminars, and short-term travel grants to researchers who require the resources of the museum and library. The Records of Francis Clark Wood Institute for the History of Medicine date from 1976 to 1998 and are divided into six series: Administration, Director's Files, Conferences and Lectures, Publications, Transactions and Studies, and Media. Abstract:: Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia’s leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM. The E.B. Krumbhaar papers covers Krumbhaar’s accomplishments and contributions to pathology and cardiac physiology from the early to mid-twentieth century. This collection contains Krumbhaar’s research files, administrative records related to organizations and institutions in which he was involved, correspondence, and medical writings. Abstract:: Elm Hill Private School and Home for the Education of Feeble-Minded Youth was founded in 1848 in Barre, Massachusetts, by physician Hervey Backus Wilbur (1820-1883). Wilbur left Elm Hill in 1851 to establish a similar but state-sponsored school in New York. His assistant, George Brown (1823-1892), took over the institution. The records of Elm Hill span the years 1842-1951. The records consist of Administrative records, Correspondence, Financial records, Medical records, Teaching records, and photographs and engravings of residents and employees.

Abstract:: The Truman G. Schnabel, Jr., Papers date from 1908 to 2007 and represent Schnabel's career at Philadelphia General Hospital and in the University of Pennsylvania's Department of Medicine, as well as the numerous professional medical organizations in which he was involved. The collection is divided into eight series: Boards, Committees, and Groups; Correspondence; Foundations; Lectures, Speeches, and Talks; Personal Files; Philadelphia General Hospital; Published Articles; and Truman G. Schnabel, Sr. Truman G. "Nipper" Schnabel, Jr., received his undergraduate degree from Yale University and his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He completed his internal medicine residency at Massachusetts General Hospital before doing a fellowship in cardiology at Penn. He also served in the military. Abstract:: The Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia opened in 1911 in Wynnefield, PA, at the Country Branch of Children's Hospital. The hospital had limited wards to house its patients and the staff hosted pre-and post-natal clinics for mothers, though the physicians of the Babies Hospital largely emphasized treatment in the home. The records of the Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia, spanning from 1911-1960, contain annual reports, newsletter pamphlets, benefit matinee programs, material related to H. Lea Hudson for both the Babies' Hospital of Philadelphia and the Fife-Hamill Memorial Health Center for Southeast Philadelphia, corporate reports, photographs, and film.
