- William Romaine Newbold was a professor and dean at the University of Pennsylvania at the turn of the twentieth century. Newbold had a great interest is puzzles, codes, and cryptography. This interest led to his work to decipher a famous coded text, commonly referred to as the Voynich Manuscript. The William Romaine Newbold Papers pertain to his work with ciphers and codes.
