Abstract:: In 3mo 1944, Rufus Jones published an article, "Are We Ready," in Friends Intelligencer. In response to his concern for deepening the spiritual life of the Religious Society of Friends, members of both the Race Street and Arch Street Philadelphia Yearly Meetings gathered six months later in the meeting house at 15th and Race Streets. Records include minutes, correspondence, and publications.

Joel and Hannah Bean Papers, 1825-1914 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joel Bean (1835-1914) and his wife, Hannah Elliott Bean (1830-1909), were prominent Quaker ministers in Iowa Yearly Meeting in the mid-nineteenth century when Quaker settlements were expanding in Iowa. Joel Bean was born in Alton, New Hampshire, in 1825, the son of John and Elizabeth Hill Bean, and educated at Friends Boarding School in Providence, Rhode Island. He migrated to Iowa in 1853, and taught school at West Branch, Iowa, from 1850 to 1861. In 1859, he married Hannah Elliott Shipley in Philadelphia. Hannah was the daughter of Thomas and Lydia Shipley of Philadelphia. Joel Bean was appointed Clerk of Iowa Yearly Meeting in 1867, and he and Hannah traveled in Europe from 1872 to 1873. The Beans opposed the extremes of revivalism, but declined to join the Conservatives in withdrawing from Iowa Yearly Meeting. Abstract:: In April of 1911, Walter R. Miles, then professor at Iowa State University, posed this query to other Quakers: Why be loyal to the Society of Friends as a distinct denomination? This collection includes responses he received over the next year from prominent Friends across the nation, particularly educators from the Midwest. The letters present their spiritual and doctrinal philosophies. Authors include J. Herschell Coffin, H. Lavinia Bailey, O. Edward Janney, Edward Grubb, Joseph Elkinton, Rufus Jones, Isaac Sharples, President of Haverford College, John F. Hanson, Murray S. Kenworthy, L.L. Abstract:: The Quaker families of Jones and Cadbury were interrelated with many other Quaker families in the United States and England. This collection provides a rich source of genealogical and historical information, not only on the Jones and Cadbury families, and especially Mary Hoxie Jones (1904-2003) and Emma Cadbury Jr. (1875-1965), but also, significantly, on the Warder family, as well as the Bartram, Brown, Carter, Foulke, Kaighn, Lowry, Mennell, Pearsall, Shinn, and Shipley families.

American Friends Fellowship Council Records, 1933-1954 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The American Friends Fellowship Council had its origin in the Fellowship Committee of the American Friends Service Committee. Founded in 1933, its primary purpose was to foster an increased interest in Quakerism throughout the United States and to draw all Friends groups into closer sympathy and fellowship. The Fellowship Council merged with the Friends World Committee, American Section, in 1954. The collection includes correspondence and administrative records, minutes, financial statements, membership lists, publicity, correspondence about new meetings, Intervisitation, and Wider Quaker Fellowship, 1933-1954.

Coffin Family Papers, 1797-1932 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Coffin family were Quakers of Wayne County, Indiana. Elijah Coffin was born in 1793 in Guilford County, N.C., the son of Bethuel and Hannah Dicks Coffin. His son and daughter-in-law, Charles F. and Rhoda M. Coffin were active in the peace movement, prison reform, reform of the treatment of the insane, and the temperance movement. Father and son both served as Clerk of Indiana Yearly Meeting. The collection contains family correspondence, journals, business papers, and miscellaneous writings. Includes documents and letters pertaining to Charles F., Rhoda M., and Elijah Coffin's prison reform activities and articles concerning the treatment of the insane, Indian rights, and temperance. Also incldues manuscripts having to do with Indiana Yearly Meeting of Friends and the Cincinnati Book Association of Friends.

Abstract:: This collection includes letters and printed materials relating to Rufus Jones. Included are photocopies of letters commenting on or criticizing The American Friend of which Rufus Jones was editor. Among these are a letter from Henry Stanley Neuman, editor of The Friend, regarding the state of the Society in England, and a letter from Walter Malone relating events at Ohio Yearly Meeting in 1894. Letters from R.L. Kelly, Joseph Moore, David Hadley, and Thomas Newlin discuss The American Friend, Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, and Quaker doctrine. A letter from J. Rendel Harris presents an issue of Biblical translation. Also included are drafts of Jones' article, Are We Ready, letters concerning its release, and Richmond P. Miller's introduction to the publication, On Your Marks! Get Set! Various personal letters to Rufus Jones and a transcript copy of his remarks at Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, entitled We Must Help Answer Our Prayers, are also included.

Abstract:: The manuscript of Rufus M. Jones, entitled "The Trail of Life in the Middle Years," is the third volume in an autobiographical series, of which the two preceding volumes are: "Finding the Trail of Life" and "The Trail of Life in College." The narrative begins in the year 1893, when Jones became the editor of "The Friends Review" and began teaching philosophy at Haverford College. In it, he discusses the state of the Society of Friends at the time, and discusses his personal reconciliation of past Quaker separations, particularly during his time as the editor of "The Friends Review."
