Abstract:

Isaac Hicks (1767-1820) was a New York Quaker merchant. He established a large fleet of international trading vessels and financially helped to support his cousin, Edward Hicks (1780-1849), the Pennsylvania Quaker folk artist. Isaac Hicks traveled extensively with his cousin, Elias Hicks (1748-1830), the New York Quaker minister. The collection contains primarily the correspondence of Isaac Hicks, including letters from Isaac Hicks to his wife describing religious journeys taken with Elias Hicks; some letters concerning the Separation of 1827-28; and business letters. Correspondents include: John Comly (letters about Edward Hicks, the primitive painter), Elias Hicks, John Murray, Jr., Thomas Rotch, William Rotch, Thomas Sturge. The letters provide insight into Quaker family life on Long Island and the travels of a Quaker minister. Also of interest is a letter concerning the disownments of Isaac T. Abstract:

This collection contains the research notes made by Alice Ford for her book, Edward Hicks Painter of the Peaceable Kingdom. These notes include genealogical information on the Hicks family and on several of his correspondents. Also included are typescripts of letters of Edward Hicks and his family. Among the correspondents are Emmor Kimber, John Comly, Elias Hicks, Benjamin and Richard Price, Elias Hicks, and Thomas McClintock. Topics include family news, issues of Quaker Spirituality, and the 1827 Hicksite separation in the Society of Friends.

Abstract:

This collection includes letters of Benjamin and Jane Price, among their family and with other Quakers. Also included are letters received by Benjamin's brother Eli K. Price regarding his legal practice, and by Benjamin's daughter-in-law Lydia H. Price, regarding family news. Bound volumes of letters record the correspondence of Benjamin and Jane Price while one or the other travelled in Quaker ministry. Of particular interest are : letters of Edward Hicks, regarding the Hicksite controversy ; letters of John Comly, regarding Quaker beliefs, the worship of Baal, and the views of Edward Hicks; letters of Deborah F. Wharton on Quaker concerns in Indian affairs; letters of Dillwyn Parrish regarding Quaker involvement in the Anti-slavery movement ; and an account by Benjamin Price of an Elias Hicks meeting. Other correspondents include Thomas Garrett, William Wharton, Jane Mott, and William Ellery Channing, regarding matters of practical or business concern.

Charles Smith Ogden family Papers, 1732-1938 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Charles Smith Ogden (1822-1904) was a Quaker businessman, genealogist, and civic leader. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, educated in Friends' schools, and married Emma Corbit in 1848. He worked as a wholesale druggist before the Civil War, was active on the committee to elect Abraham Lincoln, and served as Consul to Quebec, Canada, 1860-1864. In 1886, he began a tour around the world, which is recounted in his travel letters, 1886-1891. This collection contains genealogical material, family correspondence, scrapbooks and memorabilia. Of particular interest are letters collected by Charles S. Smith from prominent Quaker correspondents including Elias and Edward Hicks, Lucretia Mott, Benjamin Ferris, and John Comly.
