Ruth Emerson majored in Greek and Latin, graduating from Bryn Mawr College in 1893. She did graduate work at Columbia College and the American School of Classical Studies in Athens in these areas, as well. She taught Latin, Greek, and History at the secondary school level. The Ruth Emerson (Fletcher) scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Ruth Emerson, Bryn Mawr College class of 1893. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1890-1897, consists mostly of letters and poems to Ruth from friends and other personal memorabilia without a lot of context.
Rebecca Mattson was from Breckenridge, Minnesota. She studied English and German at Bryn Mawr College, graduating in 1896. After graduation, Mattson taught English and Latin at Miss Bardwell's School (1896-98), later serving as principal of the school (1898-1902). In 1901, she married Philip Jackson Darlington and had three children. The Rebecca Mattson Darlington scrapbook comprises Mattson's one volume scrapbook and covers her last two years at Bryn Mawr, from 1894-1896. It provides a unique view of the early days of Bryn Mawr.
The J. Hampton Barnes Collection of Autograph Letters consists of 37 documents, most which are letters written to Dr. David Hosack (1769-1835). After attending Columbia and Princeton, he began his medical practice in Alexandria, VA. He subsequently was Professor of Botany at Columbia and taught in the medical school. He was the attending physician at the Burr-Hamilton duel, a founder of Rutgers Medical College, a founder of Bellevue Hospital in New York City, and an author of numerous scientific works and biographies. The collection contains correspondence from a number of noteworthy people, such as Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Baron von Humboldt, and Sir Humphry Davy.
