This book of notes was kept by David Greenman during a course of Materia Medica lectures delivered by Dr. Adam Kuhn at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1785. The lecture notes themselves are not limited to Materia Medica in the strictest sense, in that they also include some information about physiology, pathology and therapeutics. The notebook is briefly inscribed by Dr. Edward Cutbush (1772-1843) an officer and surgeon in the United States Navy.

Abstract:

Katharine "Kay" E. Reichert was an Air Force nurse who served with the Far East Air Force in Japan during the Korean War. After her return to the United States, Reichert earned her B.S. in Nursing Education from the University of Pennsylvania and then her M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. The bulk of this collection is comprised of photo albums and scrapbooks documenting daily life and excursions to destinations around Japan. Also included are official and personal papers and ephemera, yearbooks from Reichert's studies at the University of Pennsylvania, and artifacts such as medical bag and equipment, military insignias and honors, and door signs.

Abstract:

I. S. Ravdin graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1918, and would spend the next fifty plus years of his career associated with Penn. During that period he rose to the posts of the John Rhea Barton Professor of Surgery, Director of the Harrison Department of Surgical Research, and Chief of Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During World War II Ravdin was Commander of the 20th General Hospital. The Papers of I. S. Ravdin reflect the entire range of his personal and professional interest, including his work as a surgeon, hospital administrator, military career, and private practice.

Eliot Stellar, a noted physiological psychologist, was a professor in the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania from 1960 – 1993, and provost from 1973 – 1978. He was also active in many professional societies, including the American Philosophical Society. The Eliot Stellar Papers, 1938-1993, document the professional activities of Dr. Stellar -- his teaching, research, his administrative duties at the University of Pennsylvania, as well as his responsibilities with other organizations outside the University.

Frank David Levy attended the College of the University of Pennsylvania for two years before entering the Medical School. At Penn he was a member of the Flexner Medical Society and the Phi Delta Upsilon social fraternity. After earning his M.D. in 1917, he had his internship at the Philadelphia General Hospital for one year from 1917 to 1918. These four items relate to Dr. Levy's years as a medical student at the University of Pennsylvania and as an intern at Philadelphia General Hospital.

Josiah C. McCracken Papers, 1906-1993 (inclusive)

Abstract:

Josiah C. McCracken's outstanding athletic abilities led to his admission to the University of Pennsylvania in 1896. At Penn, he was elected president of his class for four years, and served as president of the Christian Association for three years. He also graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1901. McCracken would spend a good part of his career in China where he served as chief surgeon of St. Luke's Hospital. The collection, though small in volume, represents two important aspects of Josiah C. McCracken's rich and splendid life--his brilliant achievement as an all-round star athlete at Penn and his life-long devotion to the development of medicine in China.

Abstract:

Alfred Newton Richards arrived at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1910 to be chair of Pharmacology, a position which he occupied until 1946, when he became Professor Emeritus. The University series consists of Richards' class lectures, notes regarding his courses, and laboratory experiment work. The laboratory experiments include those carried out by colleagues and students and those carried out solely by Richards or in conjunction with colleagues and students. Kidney function is the general subject of most of the experiments, but many specific aspects of this subject are examined.

William Rhys Jones was a physician who, as a young man, kept a detailed journal of his final year in Penn's School of Medicine, 1920-1921. This collection consists of a single volume of William Rhys Jones' handwritten notes on obstetrics and gynecology cases during his final year of medical school (1920-1921) at the University of Pennsylvania. The journal contains accounts of 147 cases; each describes an unnamed patient treated by Jones under the supervision of his professor, Dr. Barton Cooke Hirst (1861-1935).
