Andrew H. Woods papers, 1885-1956 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Andrew H. Woods (1872 – 1956) became vice president of Canton College in Guangzhou, China in 1899. He maintained his association with Canton Christian College throughout the Boxer Rebellion, or Yihetuan Movement, and the end of the Qing dynasty. Woods moved back and forth between China and the United States with his wife, Fanny Sinclair, who graduated from Bryn Mawr in 1901. In 1929, the couple and their children settled in Iowa. In Iowa, Woods worked as a professor and practitioner of neurology and psychology. Andrew H. Woods' papers include diaries which describe his personal life and professional life in China and in the United States, photographs and postcards, much of Agnes Sinclair's personal correspondence, his articles, and various papers.

Abstract:: LeRoy Smith, Jr. attended the University of Pennsylvania where he received a B.S. in Education from in 1934 and a Masters of Arts Degree in 1943. The collection consists of academic and religious poems written by Smith from his college days throughout the remainder of his life.

Alfred Bendiner Papers, 1921-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Alfred Bendiner received both a bachelor of architecture degree in 1922 and a master's degree in 1927 from the University of Pennsylvania. In 1937, when he accompanied the University Museum's archeological expedition to Tepe Gawra and Khafaji, Iraq, Bendiner's task was to draw architectural blueprints of these sites. He was also architect to the university's Tikal-Tikal archeological expedition to Guatamala in 1960. These papers include Alfred Bendiner's published articles and his drawings (originals and reproductions) done for publications by his class and by the University of Pennsylvania.

Abstract:: Paul H. Musser was promoted to Administrative Vice President of the University of Pennsylvania in July of 1939. During World War II, Musser held the important position as the chairman of the University Committee on National Defense which coordinated the University's war efforts. The Office of the Executive Vice President, Paul H. Musser Administration Records consist of documents, publications, and the correspondence of Musser with regard to the University of Pennsylvania and the Second World War, particularly in Musser's capacity of the chair of the University Committee on National Defense.

Abstract:: The John Bartram Association was founded in 1893 for the purpose of protecting and enhancing the the home and garden of John Bartram, known today as "Bartram's Garden." This collection, dating from 1779 to 1937 (bulk 1893 to 1911), document the association's foundation and early administrative activities predominately through correspondence, accented by newspaper clippings, advertising fliers, and invitation cards.

Walter Hart Blumenthal papers, 1899-1965 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection contains some papers of the Jewish American scholar, writer and editor, Walter Hart Blumenthal (1883-1969). Although composed primarily of Blumenthal's short stories and poetry, the collection includes one scholarly article published in 1960, titled "Spurious Shakespeare Portraiture" with some accompanying research materials. In 1965 Blumenthal compiled his poetry into the typescript of "Exit Laughing" and his short stories into "Perspectives: Stories of This Brief Tenement Wherein the Spirit Dwells", both ultimately unpublished.

This collection documents his professional career and contains extensive information on his research relating to the history of music in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, the location of European music manuscripts in the United States, and his work identifying sources for Répertoire International des Sources Musicales; his work with music organizations including the American Musicological Society and the Music Library Association; and his work at and for the University of Pennsylvania's Music Library.
