Abstract:: James Wood (1839-1925) was "interested in education, philanthropy, in the various branches of agriculture, in archaeology, history, Indian lore, anthropology, science, in prison reform and above all, in the Bible and religion," (ABS, 2). He was also a business man, serving as President of the Genesee Salt Company in Piffard, New York. The James Wood papers are divided into twelve series: "Biographical Material:" "Agriculture;" Business and Financial Material;" "Collected Quaker Material;" "Correspondence;" "Hugh Barbour Writings and Talks regarding James Wood;" "Journals;" "Organizations;" "Photographs and Albums;" "Political Involvement;" Prison Reform;" and lastly, "Writings by James Wood." This collection contains many materials, including correspondence, photographs, record books, awards, and printed material such as newspapers and pamphlets. Abstract:: The Sarah Wistar Rhoads family papers indicate strong relationships and family ties that spanned the 19th and 20th centuries. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love. These papers include correspondence, financial records, diaries and journals, memorabilia, classwork and notes, copied poems, prayers, sermons and verses, memorials, genealogical research, Quaker material and photographs. Researchers interested in family papers and Quaker family dynamics, social life, and customs may find this collection extremely useful.

Abstract:: Primarily correspondence related to Wood's activities in areas of peace, civil rights, African American education, and Quaker education. Wood was founding member of American Civil Liberties Union, American Friends Service Committee, and National Urban League. He was president of the Urban League for 26 years; elected in 1917 to Fisk University Board of Trustees; and a member of Haverford College Board of Managers. Correspondents include Jane Addams, Roger N. Baldwin, W. E. B. DuBois, Rufus M. Jones, Thomas Elsa Jones, Oswald Garrison Villard, Booker T. Washington and many others.

Abstract:: The papers of Morris Evans Leeds (1869-1952), a Philadelphia Quaker who graduated from Haverford College and became president of Leeds & Northrup Company, manufacturers of precision instruments. He was also an inventor and developer. Leeds was a member of the Board of Haverford College and active on the School Board of Philadelphia.

Abstract:: This collection contains letters and cards exchanged between various family members, including Elizabeth (Bettina) Vaux Wistar, Mary Emlen Wistar, and Frederic Vaux Wistar. Many of the letters were sent from Europe between 1893 and 1894. There is also an assortment of financial and legal papers. The section "Travel and Sightseeing Materials" is particularly noteworthy. It contains a journal written by Emma F. Wistar in which she recounts her 1866 trip to Niagara Falls, making special note of botanical specimens, including dried plant and flower samples. Additionally, there is a brief account by B.V. Wistar about his experience at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The collection contains formal photographs taken by Philadelphia photography studios.
