- Abstract:
- The Grand Army of the Republic was a fraternal organization of Civil War veterans. A post in Conshocken, named in honor of George Smith, was organized in 1867. The George Smith Post No. 79, Grand Army of the Republic photographs and "Personal War Sketches" consist of about three-dozen photographs and one volume. The photographs are all identified portraits of Civil War veterans. In the volume of "Personal War Sketches," veterans recorded their mustering dates, rank, and sometimes personal narratives of their experiences.
