Harold J. Chance papers, 1938-1964 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Harold J. Chance (1898-1975) worked for peace education through the American Friends Service Committee, the Peace Caravans, the Youth Section of the Emergency Peace Campaign, the Institute of International Relations, and the Friends Peace Service from 1934-1964. Included in the Harold Chance papers are correspondence, journals, writings, mailings, reports, and materials on the Friends Peace Service. Also included are Harold Haines Brinton's (1884-1973) lectures and course notes on topics such as history and religion, mysticism in various religions, religion and social change, and the philosophy of pacifism. Researchers will find this collection is especially rich in Quaker history, specifically relating to the discussion of the use of the Quaker voice by individual Friends' groups, in the mid 1950's.

Civilian Public Service publications, 1941-1946 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection consists primarily of the publications of conscientious objectors (COs) working at Civilian Public Service (CPS) camps in the United States during World War II, performing "work of national importance" in lieu of combat. Camps were established for various purposes, from firefighting in the rural West to caring for mental patients and the elderly. The publications cover areas across the United States, although are focused in the Northeast, Upper Midwest, and California. Two publications appear to be from outside the United States. Publications range from the basic to the elaborate and cover all aspects of the lives of COs-- the mundane as well as the profound. Many publications intermittently published tables of all men who were in that specific camp at the time, or of all men who had passed through the camp. Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton papers, 1859-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Howard Haines Brinton and Anna Shipley Cox Brinton were 20th-century Quaker educators and prolific authors whose areas of expertise included the physical sciences and the Classics. Notably, they also worked for the American Friends Service Committee in Europe, for Friends Center in Tokyo, Japan, and as directors of Pendle Hill, an adult study center in Wallingford, PA. They were both recorded ministers in the Religious Society of Friends. This collection also contains materials of other Brinton, Bean, Cox and Shipley Family members.

Elkinton, Waring Family papers, 1815-2006 (inclusive)

Abstract:: This collection includes information about multiple generations of the Elkinton and Waring families. It is concentrated on two generations: firstly, that of Howard West Elkinton (1892-1955) and Katharine Wistar Mason Elkinton (1892/3-1961), his wife, and secondly, that of their daughter, Theodora Elkinton (1927-) who married Thomas Waring (1921-2001). It is a story of life choices made by these Quakers: for Howard and Katharine Elkinton, to serve under the American Friends Service Committee in Europe after World War I and during World War II providing relief aid, and for Theodora and Tom Waring to continue this tradition by serving in Finland after World War II and then in the field of education in the United States.

American Friends Service Committee lantern slides of World War I relief work, 1914-1922 (inclusive)

Extent:: 3.4 cubic ft. (29 lantern slide boxes (2 boxes of pa 193 - france set d; and 3 boxes of each other pa))
Abstract:: English and American Quakers were involved in relief efforts in Europe during and after WWI. These efforts were begun by English Quakers of London Yearly Meeting, and later joined by the American Friends Service Committee. They expanded the scope of their aid from France to also include Russia, Serbia, Poland, Austria, and Germany. The lantern slides in this collection were taken during these relief efforts and, along with lecture notes, sent back home to Friends groups who would use the slides in presentations, usually for fundraising purposes.
