Records of the Committee on the Joseph N. Pew Memorial Loan Fund, 1961-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In December 1961, the College received a $25,000 gift from the Pew Memorial Trust. The gift was intended to help the College reach financial stability and to start a drive benefitting interns and residents in area hospitals. In response, the Committee on Internship and Residency was established in 1962. The Internship and Residency Committee sent out questionnaires to Philadelphia-area hospital administrators, residents, and interns. Data collected from residents and interns included marital status, professional goals, whether they had insurance, and whether they had loans from medical school. The purpose of the questionnaires was to establish whether the Philadelphia area had need of a loan fund (for residents and interns) sponsored by the College. Forty out of the forty-five hospitals contacted responded, and the majority recognized the need for such a program. Letters from Fellows requesting Library privileges for non-Fellows, 1870-1951; 1975; undated (inclusive) 1910-1940 (bulk)

Abstract:
Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The Letters from Fellows requesting Library privileges for non-Fellows collection spans the years 1870 to 1974, although many years are not represented, and the bulk of the correspondence dates from 1910 to 1940. Included in this collection are letters of recommendation and signed business cards written by College Fellows to introduce non-Fellows to the College Library, and ask permission for the non-Fellows to use the Library. Abstract:
The Office of the Executive Director is the lead office in charge of administering the business of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. The Executive Director oversees the activities of the College of Physicians staff including staff of the Historical Medical Library, the Mütter Museum, the Francis Clark Wood Institute, and the Finance Department. The Executive Director also oversees the College functions of institutional advancement, communications, membership, and special events. The records in this collection document the everyday administrative activities and governance of the College, and span the years 1971 to 2005. Materials consist of correspondence, memoranda, reports, pamphlets of outside organizations, financial reports, minutes, and agendas. This collection is divided into five series. Records of the United States Marine Hospital II, 1870-1934; undated (inclusive) 1877-1882 (bulk)

Abstract:
On 16 July 1798, the United States Congress established the Marine Hospital Service under the Treasury Department for the benefit of sick and disabled members of the mercantile marine. Each seaman was assessed a tax of 40 cents per month, and these dues were fed into a hospital fund which paid for the Service. The first marine hospital opened at Washington Point, Virginia, in 1800. The Service was reorganized in 1870. Its activities were standardized under the Supervising Surgeon. The Service was divided into stations with functioning marine hospitals and relief stations where seamen were admitted to local hospitals for treatment; Philadelphia was a relief station of the first class. Each station of this type was under the supervision of a Surgeon. Abstract:
Allen R. Myers was born in Baltimore on January 14, 1935. He graduated from University of Pennsylvania and received his M.D. from University of Maryland in 1960; his medical specialties were Internal Medicine and Rheumatology. He spent the majority of his career in academia and was elected College President in 2000 and served two terms. Myers died in January 2020. This collection dates from 1999-2003, and documents Allen Myers' time as College President. It contains correspondence, committee meeting reports and documents, information related to College Fellowship, information relating to building restoration projects and facility usage during the presidency, reports from the president and executive director, two public health programs, and press releases from the College.

Records of the Building Fund Committee and Building Committee, 1883-1911 (inclusive)

Abstract:
There have several iterations of a Building Fund Committee during the College's history. The first was formed in 1849 to "ascertain and report to the College the probable cost of a lot and the sum necessary to erect thereon a building suitable for the accommodation of the College, and to suggest a plan for raising the funds estimated to be requisite for the execution of the project." In its most recent form, the Committee was likely re-established in the early 1900s when the College began exploring the idea of constructing a new, larger building. The current home of the College was completed in 1909, and the Committee may have been disbanded soon after. The Building Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was appointed on 6 April 1904, shortly after the Fellows elected to construct a new College building on 22nd and Ludlow Streets. Abstract:
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia developed the Section on Humanism in Medicine to help enrich the curriculum of local medical schools in the area. This initiative was conceptualized in the early 2000s and ended in 2007, with funding supported by Horace W. Goldsmith and Arcadia Foundations. The Section aimed to bridge the arts and humanities with medicine, inviting visiting scholars, doubling as successful poets and writers, to present their compositions and artists to exhibit their creations surrounding the core theme of hope and healing amongst pain. The Records of the Section on Humanism in Medicine spans from 1986 to 2007. The collection consists mostly of paper materials (with some mixed materials) involving speaker lectures or artist exhibitions offered at The College of Physicians of Philadelphia (CPP) during these years. Records of the Section on Dermatology, 1986-2001 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Section on Dermatology was established by Lawrence Parish and Joseph Witkowski on December 22, 1981. The requirements for membership were "a professional interest in and a respect for dermatology." The Section held four or five meetings a year on Wednesday evenings; these meetings generally included a lecture followed by a cocktail hour and dinner. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Dermatology. The Records of the Section on Dermatology span the years 1986 to 2001 and consist mainly of correspondence. General correspondence (1986 to 1997) files contain a brief history of the Section, thank-you notes for monetary donations, correspondence with speakers, and some membership lists, but focus mainly on the financial situation of the Section.
