Abstract:
The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." The collection, 1924-2003, includes minutes, correspondence, reports, and related records regarding the activity of the American Law Institute Council.

American Law Institute Uniform Commercial Code records, 1935-2003 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) was the result of a joint project between the American Law Institute (ALI) and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law (NCCUSL). Work on the UCC began in 1945 in response to a perceived need by members of both ALI and NCCUSL to consolidate a number of uniform laws, previously enacted by NCCUSL, related to commercial transactions. NCCUSL was established in 1891 for the purpose of codifying state law by creating uniform laws and model acts. ALI was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American Law. The Institute had previously developed a codification of particular areas of the law, known as the Restatement of the Law. Thus, cooperation between ALI and NCCUSL on the UCC presented a likely partnership. The first version of the UCC was approved in 1951. American Law Institute Model Penal Code records, 1942-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Model Penal Code, first completed in 1962 and revised and expanded over the next 20 years, played a role in the revision and codification of criminal law. The Chief Reporter on the project was Herbert Wechsler. A Criminal Law Advisory Committee was established to provide the reportorial staff with guidance in the drafting of the Code. A Proposed Official Draft was published in 1962. This version generated wide response among legislatures and courts, prompting a revision and expansion of the code's commentaries that began in 1976. A final version of the Model Penal Code, with revised commentaries, was published in 1985. The Code influenced the areas of jurisdiction, double jeopardy, responsibility, criminal attempts, theft, abortion, obscenity, sentencing, and capital punishment. Uniform Contribution Among Tortfeasors Act records, 1937-1941 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1936, The American Law Institute and the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Law jointly undertook a project to draft a statute that established a common policy for dealing with contributions among people who have been found guilty of committing a wrong. The statute, promulgated in 1939, was called the Uniform Contribution Among Tortfeasors Act. The collection, 1937-1941, includes drafts and correspondence related to the joint ALI-NCCUSL project to draft a model statute concerned with contributions among tortfeasors.

The American Law Institute (ALI) was founded in 1923 in response to a perceived uncertainty and complexity in American law. Former Penn Law Dean William Draper Lewis was the Institute's first director, running the organization's operations out of his campus office. The ALI was conceived as a representative gathering of the American Bar (including Judges, Lawyers, and Law Professors) for the stated mission "to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its better adaptation to social needs, to secure the better administration of justice and to encourage and carry on scholarly and scientific legal work." Henry S. Drinker Papers, 1929-1950 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Henry S. Drinker (1880-1965) was graduate of Haverford College, Harvard University, and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1904, Drinker joined the prominent Philadelphia Law firm Drinker Biddle & Reath in 1904. An authority on legal ethics, Drinker's book on the subject, "Legal Ethics," was published in 1933 and went on to become a classic. An amateur musicologist, Drinker founded the Drinker Library of Choral Music at the Free Library of Philadelphia. The Drinker Music Center was dedicated in his name at Haverford College in 1962. Primarily writings by Henry S. Drinker regarding criticism by Sir Francis Newbolt over some of his books, an essay called "Legal Plots," and a writing called "The Lawyers of Anthony Trollope. The collection, 1929-1950, also includes correspondence with Alfred A. Knopf and Sir Francis Newbolt.

Bernard G. Segal papers, 1910-1997 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Bernard G. Segal graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School (now known as the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School) in 1931. Segal became the youngest Deputy Attorney General in Pennsylvania's history in 1932, the first Jewish lawyer elected Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association in 1952, and the first Jewish president of the American Bar Association in 1969. Segal also co-chaired the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and headed the Office of Economic Opportunity's Advisory Committee on Legal Services to the Poor. The Bernard G. Segal papers document all of Segal's activities outside of his work as a lawyer at Schnader, Harrison, Segal, and Lewis. This includes correspondence, reports, and minutes from his professional associations, governmental appointments, and his civic work.

Abstract:
A. Leo Levin, born in 1919 received his B.A. from Yeshiva University in 1939. He attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School and received his J.D. in 1942. Levin then took his first teaching job at the University of Iowa where he taught for two years before returning to his alma mater Penn Law School. Levin taught at Penn Law until his appointment as Director of the Federal Judicial Center in 1977. Levin participated in numerous legal professional organizations such as the American Bar Association, the Association of American Law Schools and the Order of the Coif. Levin also served on a number of high profile judiciary committees such as the Legislative Reapportionment Committee from 1971-1973, the Commission on Revision of the Federal Court Appellate System from 1973-1975, and the Civil Justice Reform Act Advisory Group. The University of Pennsylvania Law School was founded in 1850 as the law department of the University of Pennsylvania.
