Abstract:
The Dillwyn and Emlen family was joined in 1795 when Susanna Dillwyn married Samuel Emlen, Jr. Both the Dillwyn and Emlen families were prominent in early America as Quakers and advocates for abolition. This collection consists of five disbound volumes of letters written to and from William Dillwyn of London and his daughter Susanna Dillwyn in America from 1770 to 1795; and thereafter until 1818, to and from Susanna and her husband Samuel Emlen, Jr. of Burlington County, New Jersey. Although Susanna lived almost her entire life apart from her father, their letters are frequent and deal primarily with family matters and kin. However, there is frequent comment concerning such topics as yellow fever; abolitionism and slavery; Native Americans; breast cancer; and American and European politics, including the Napoleonic wars and the embargo, as well as their effects upon trade and merchants in Philadelphia and London.

Abstract:
Edwin Wolf 2nd (1911-1991) was a librarian, bibliophile, author, historian, Franklin scholar, and a civic leader in Philadelphia. Wolf was Curator of the Library Company from 1953 to 1955, and then served as Librarian from 1955 to 1984. During those years, he led the Library Company though a period of rejuvenation, growth, and prosperity. The Edwin Wolf 2nd papers contain correspondence, research files, volumes, publications, photographs, and other records that document the education, career, and personal family life of one of Philadelphia’s most prominent bookmen during the 20th century.

Abstract:
Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson (1737-1801), considered to be the outstanding female poet of her place and time, was a leader in the literary world of colonial Pennsylvania and an avid writer, who composed poems, songs, travel accounts and other writings, referencing literature, natural history, religion, politics and current events. This collection consists of six volumes of writings which probably represent all of her work, most of which is unpublished. Researchers interested in Elizabeth Graeme Fergusson, women authors in colonial America and the early United States, or a female commentary on contemporary events will find this collection to be extremely valuable.

Thomas Leiper and family business records, 1771-1947 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Thomas Leiper (1745-1825) was introduced into the business of tobacco shortly after his arrival in Virginia in 1763. Within several years, he moved to Philadelphia where he opened a tobacco shop. During the Revolutionary War, Leiper became the principal tobacco provider in Philadelphia. In 1776, Leiper purchased land in Delaware County that included a mill at a waterfall on the Crum Creek. He established snuff mills and later purchased a stone quarry. The Thomas Leiper and family business records include correspondence, country estate records, and business and financial records of the family's paper, lumber and wood working businesses, quarry business, and tobacco business dating from 1771 to 1947.

Abstract:
The Logan family was prominent in Philadelphia from the start of the province, serving the people in many capacities, including political, medical and literary. This is a collection of manuscripts obtained by the Library Company of Philadelphia that relates to the Logan family. The collection includes papers of the Logan family members Albanus Charles, Algernon Sydney, Deborah Norris, William Jr., and James as well as family materials collected by Frances A. Logan and William Logan Fox. The collection dates from 1684 to 1925 and consists of family papers, correspondence, diaries, writings, medical texts, lecture notes, financial records, poetry, visiting cards, and invitations.

Abstract:
Gerard van Swieten (1770-1772) was a Dutch-Austrian physician who served as the personal physician to Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in 1745 and transformed the Austrian health services as well as medical university education. This collection consists of eight volumes of medical writings in Latin concerning nutrition, pharmacy, and surgery. Several pages at the beginning of Volume I, and a few pages elsewhere, are translated into English on the facing pages.

Abstract:
The Library Company of Philadelphia was founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin and a group of like-minded Philadelphians as a subscription library supported by its shareholders. The Library Company quickly became the most important book resource for colonial Philadelphians. Its collecting policy was responsive to the needs of its intellectually alert and economically ambitious membership, so it also built a significant collection of pamphlets, prints, maps, ephemera, graphic arts materials, and even scientific equipment and other objects. By 1769, the Library Company had absorbed Philadelphia's Union Library Company, Association Library Company, and Amicable Library, and in 1792, it agreed to annex the Loganian Library as a separate-but-related entity. The Weiss family was prominent in the coal business in eastern Pennsylvania during the late 1700s and 1800s. The Weiss family collection dates from 1777 to 1916 and documents, most fully, Jacob Weiss (1750-1839), Francis White (1773-1845), and Francis White (1819-1888). The papers include diaries, geological and surveying notebooks, maps and observations; personalia and biographical notes; transcribed documents, portraits, scrapbooks, business journals, daybooks, mercantile records and account books as well as correspondence of many members of the family.

Benjamin Sharp (1858-1915), a zoologist who was primarily affiliated with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, attended Swarthmore College (1876) and earned a M.D. and Ph.D.from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked in the Caribbean, the Hawaiian Islands and in the Arctic, where he was in charge of zoology for Peary's first Arctic Expedition in 1891.

The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia (ANSP) is a natural history museum which was founded in 1812, “for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning.” The ANSP Board of Trustees, was established in 1925, as one of the institution’s primary administrative bodies. The Board of Trustees was charged with establishing financial policies, selecting the Academy President, assisting with fund raising and community relations, and serving as a board of review. This collection of Trustees records dating from 1925 to 1990 contains minutes and correspondence of various Board committees, policies and procedures, departmental activity reports, annual meetings and files from the President's office related to board matters.

Abstract:
Crawford Hallock Greenewalt (1902-1993) was a chemical engineer and the President of the DuPont Company from 1948 to 1962. He had a passion for the natural sciences, and combined his love of ornithology with photography. He was especially known for his high speed photographs of hummingbirds. His ornithological interests included bird songs, the radiance of hummingbird feathers and the evolution of shapes and sizes of birds in relation to their flight abilities. The Crawford H. Greenewalt papers document Greenewalt's personal study of ornithology, primarily his work on hummingbirds. The collection dates from 1951 to 1993 and consists primarily of photographs taken by Greenewalt, and technical data collected by Greenewalt. The images photographed by Greenewalt exist in many different formats throughout the collection, including prints, negatives, and slides. The oldest natural science research institution and museum in the Americas, the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia (ANSP) was founded in 1812 "for the encouragement and cultivation of the sciences, and the advancement of useful learning." Since the founding of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, there have been twenty-eight presidents and five acting presidents. From 1937 to 1995, there were four presidents and one acting president who left their administrations well documented: Charles M.B. Cadwalader (1937-1951), William M. Marvel (1971-1974), Milton H. Wahl (1974-1976), Thomas Peter Bennett (1976-1985) and Keith Stewart Thomson (1986-1995). In addition, several key staff members who worked closely with these presidents left a record of their influence and contributions. Horace G. Richards (1906-1984) was a geologist at the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia and an authority on the geologic formations of the Atlantic coastal plain. His research specialty focused on geology and paleontology of the Quaternary Period (approximately the past 1.8 million years), but his research interests also included Cenozoic mollusca, and marine Pleistocene geology and paleontology of the Atlantic coastal plain. Additionally, he studied climate change and coastal shorelines, which required extensive fieldwork, taking him all over the world. Richards was also an adjunct professor at two universities and frequently guest lectured at various institutions. The Horace G. Edmund Norwood Bacon (1910-2005) was an American urban planner, architect, educator, and author. He served as the executive director of the Philadelphia City Planning Commission from 1949 to 1970. He authored the seminal urban planning book Design of Cities. The Edmund N. Bacon records (collection: 292) contains materials that are related to his work before and after his association with the Philadelphia City Planning Commission. While some materials related to this period can be found in the collection, the bulk remains with the city of Philadelphia.

Abstract:
George Wagoner (1896-1957), was a Philadelphia-based orthopedic surgeon who spent his career studying bone pathology. He served in administrative and teaching roles in various hospitals in Philadelphia and pioneered the celloidin mount technique for microscopic examination of total specimen sections. Collection materials consist of photographs, x-rays, glass slides, academic publications, correspondence, and personal papers. This collection is divided into three series. The first series, Photographs and Illustrations, houses photographs, glass slides, and x-rays used for professional and personal purposes. The second series, Papers, contains Dr. Wagoner's personal papers and the third series, Publications, deals with the papers Dr. Wagoner wrote for publication in academic journals.

The functions of the Office of Advancement include all aspects of fundraising; public relations for the entire College; and administration of the Fellowship and Friends of the Mütter, a membership program open to the public which supports the Mütter Museum. The Mütter Museum was founded in 1856 when Dr. Thomas Dent Mütter bequeathed his personal medical museum to the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. From Thomas Mütter's collection, the museum grew as a noted repository for unique collections of medical specimens across the world. The Mütter Museum records document the history of this noted institution from 1887 until 2006. Included in the collection are catalogs of item acquisitions, visitor records, event records, and the papers of several museum curators. Researchers interested in the acquisition policies of the museum, as well as records of events and exhibits held at the Mutter should consult this collection. Additionally, the papers of Gretchen Worden are housed in this collection. Abstract:
The office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was created during the organization of the College in 1787. The Secretary is the appointed officer of record. The position's original duties were to record the minutes and transactions of the College and preserve its documents and correspondence. This collection contains correspondence of the Office of the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia from the 1890s to 1908, along with several letters dating to the 1830s and 1958. Of note is the resignation of Thomas Parke, dated 27 August 1833, from the Office of the President. This collection also holds the Secretary's annual reports, 1934-1940, as well as a file regarding the Chana Medical School project (1963).

Abstract:
This daybook contains medical observations and recipes from Philadelphia resident, Dr. Solomon Bush. The son of Mathias Bush, Dr. Solomon Bush practiced medicine around the time of the Revolutionary War despite not having any formal training. In addition to his medical case studies and remedy recipes, his daybook also includes a memorandum of his marriage to Ann, the daughter of Christopher Marshall on April 2, 1791. The announcement of the birth of his son, Nathan Marshall Bush, follows on February 23rd, 1792. This collection was discovered during a survey in the summer and fall of 2015.

The Sturgis Photograph Collection was donated to the College in the early 1980s by Doctors Katharine R. and Samuel B. Sturgis. It contains a large number of the College's pictures and oversize documents (diplomas, certificates, etc.). The subjects of the materials range from portraits of physicians, early hospital buildings, group photographs of medical societies, and class photographs of medical school students, to lecture matriculation cards and medical illustrations. Researchers should note that the collection contains a wide variety of early photographs of the College's buildings, both the previous building at 13th & Locust Streets, and the present building and 19 S. 22nd Street. Abstract:
During the 1970s, there was an emphasis on continuing medical education (CME) for practicing licensed medical doctors. Lifetime licenses to practice medicine were being replaced by limited time licenses that required renewal. In order to renew their state issued medical licenses, doctors were required to obtain continuing education credits. Beginning in 1974, the College of Physicians of Philadelphia offered symposiums, distance education programs, courses in Philadelphia, and additional programs. These programs include PREP, PREP CV, and the Emergency Medicine program. The College's CME programs ended in 1980 and 1981. The Records of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia Continuing Education Programs date from 1973 to 1981 and consist of correspondence and records pertaining to continuing education programs, including the Basic Science Section, FOCUS, College Night, PREP, PREP CV, CME, Emergency Medicine, and other programs. Abstract:
Paul Esnard Bechet was born July 28, 1881 and died January 3, 1962. In 1903, he received his medical degree from Tulane University. Early in his career, Bechet assisted during the yellow fever epidemic of 1905 in New Orleans. From 1909 to 1934, Bechet worked at the New York Skin and Cancer Hospital as a clinical assistant, assistant physician, and physician. In his later life, he owned a private medical practice in Elizabeth, New Jersey. The Paul E. Bechet papers consist of the personal papers of Paul Esnard Bechet, M.D. (1881-1962). These papers consist mainly of correspondence with colleagues. Also included are certificates and awards, records of his medical practice, and historical photographs.

Abstract:
George W. Merchant, a druggist, began manufacturing his Gargling Oil in Lockport, NY, in 1833. Merchant's Gargling Oil was not meant to be gargled, as the name suggests, but used as a liniment. Like many 19th-century patent medicines, it was advertised to effectively treat numerous ailments, including rheumatism, burns and scalds, flesh wounds, toothaches, cracked heels, hemorrhoids, and sprains and bruises. Around 1855, Merchant sold the business to M. H. Tucker, who continued manufacturing the Gargling Oil. The M. H. Tucker Company continued manufacturing Merchant's Gargling Oil until 1928, when the factory burned down. The Records of the M. H. Tucker and Company consist of seven items, all pertaining to the company's Merchant's Gargling Oil. The collection includes several bills of sale, dating from from 1856 to 1857; undated testimonials; and an almanac for the year 1870.

United States Army 95th Evacuation Hospital reports, 1944-1945 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The 95th Evacuation Hospital's official station was set up at Fort Breckenridge, Kentucky on August 25, 1942. In April 1943, the Hospital shipped out to North Africa from New York City. The unit served as support to the U.S. Fifth Army through the end of the North Africa campaign, as well as Italian campaigns at Naples-Foggia, Anzio, and Rome-Arno. In August 1944, the Hospital was reassigned to the U.S. Seventh Army, and supported it through campaigns in southern France, the Rhineland, Ardennes-Alsace, and Central Europe. The Hospital was still functioning on May 8, 1945 (V-E Day), and remained in Germany until June. It was officially inactivated at Camp Kilmer, Stelton, New Jersey on December 3, 1945. John Redman Coxe was born on 16 September 1773 in Trenton, N.J. and died in Philadelphia on 22 March 1864. He earned his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1794. Coxe held the positions of Professor of Chemistry (1809-1818) and Professor of Materia Medica and Pharmacy (1818-1835) at the University of Pennsylvania. One volume of notes (254 pages) taken by an unknown student from a course of lectures on materia medica delivered at the University of Pennsylvania by John Redman Coxe, dating from November 1824 to February 1825.

Mary R. McCarl typescript essay on Thomas M. Boulware, 27 April 1989

Abstract:
Thomas M. Boulware was born in Hannibal, Missouri, in 1903, and graduated from Washington University Medical School in 1926. Boulware was well-known for his work with the poor and Black communities in Birmingham. He served on the maternal health committees of Jefferson County Medical Society and the Medical Association of the State of Alabama. In addition to helping establish the first maternity clinic for poor women at Hillman Hospital in 1935, Boulware ran the Maternity Clinic at the Slossfield Community Center from 1941 to 1948, and served on the staffs of Children's Home Hospital and Holy Family Hospital, all of which chiefly treated the city's poor African-American populations. Abstract:
The Committee on Scientific Business was created by an amendment to the ordinances and by-laws adopted in October 1907. The original committee members were appointed in November 1907. It seems the purpose of the committee was to schedule presentations by Fellows during College meetings. It is unclear when the Committee was disbanded, but it is no longer active (2018). The Records of the Committee span the years 1910 to 1940, and then from 1972 to 1978, and are comprised mainly of annual reports, minutes, and correspondence from and regarding the Committee's meetings. Several transcripts of presentations, given in 1972 and 1973, are also included in the collection, as well correspondence and event planning information for College Night 1976, the Bicentennial Series.

The Committee and its members were not listed in Transactions & Studies until 1973, but because the earliest records in this collection date to the 1930s, some earlier form of the Committee on Nominations must have existed. As of 2018, this is still an active committee. The Records of the Committee on Nominations for College Elections dates from the 1930s and from 1970 to 1978. The earliest records in the collection are reports from 1935, 1938, and 1940; the records from the 1970s include meeting reports, correspondence, and election results.

The Institute for Advancement of Medical Communication (IAMC) was founded in 1958 as an independent, non-profit organization devoted solely to promoting better communication among biomedical and health science practitioners. On May 26, 1970, The Council of the College voted unanimously to assume the corporate administration of the IAMC with a Board of Directors under the Chairmanship of Dr. Francis C. Wood. The program was discontinued in late 1972 or 1973. The Records of the Institute for Advancement of Medical Communication (IAMC) span the years 1968 to 1973, and document the College's involvement with, and acquisition of, the IAMC, through correspondence as well as reports of College's Library Committee.

Abstract:
The Records of the Committee on Fellowship span the years 1983 to 1892, although the bulk of the material dates from 1974 to 1978. Included in the collection are three volumes of list of Fellows and deceased Fellows, dating from 1973 to 1892, and 1918 to 1979. Correspondence and reports from meetings and regarding the status are Fellows date from 1949 to 1978. The Committee on Fellowship became a standing Committee of the College of Physicians in 1972. The by-laws of this year state that the Committee on Fellowship "shall seek candidates for Fellowship and help process their nominations" and "investigate every candidate for Fellowship thoroughly".

There are ten postcards in the collection, all from patients reporting new cases or requesting visits from Cooper.

Abstract:
Katharine Rosenbaum Guest Boucot Sturgis was born in Philadelphia in 1903, and graduated from Woman's Medical College of Philadelphia in 1940. Katharine R. Sturgis's connection with the College of Physicians of Philadelphia began in 1951 when she was elected a Fellow. In 1972, after more than twenty years as a member, Sturgis became the College's first woman president. A year later, she was forced to retire due to health problems. Sturgis died in Philadelphia in 1987. The Katharine R. Sturgis presidential papers date from 1972 to 1974, and consists of Council minutes; correspondence; and files related to a memorial service for former College President John H. Gibbon and a symposium on open heart surgery, both held in 1973. Researchers will find this collection completes the records found in CPP 2/002-01, Presidential papers of Katharine Sturgis, and CPP 2/002-02, General correspondence file of Katharine R. Sturgis.

Established in 1788, the Library of the College of Physicians served as Philadelphia's central medical library for over 150 years, serving medical schools, hospitals, physicians and other health professionals. Today, it is an independent research library devoted to the history of medicine and serves hundreds of scholars, health professionals, students and popular writers each year. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia Library records (1882 to 2005) extensively documents the administration of the College Library, as well as its public services and functions. The collection contains the papers of several librarians, curators, and other library staff, including Andrea Kenyon, Marjorie Smink, Elliott Morse, and Anthony Aguirre. The collection largely comprises correspondence, reports and records, and the bulk of the material dates from 1953 to 2007.

The Section on Otology and Laryngology (later Otolaryngology) was established December 12, 1893, under Section 1 of the Rules Governing Sections. The original Executive Committee of the Section included J. Solis Cohen, Charles Burnett, and B. Alexander Randall. Its first meeting was held December 20, 1893, where Harrison Allen was elected as Chairman and Charles Burnett as Clerk. The Section continued to meet on the first Tuesday of every month. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Otolaryngology. This collection contains the annual reports and small amount of correspondence of the Section on Otolaryngology, dating from 1894 to 1928 and 1934 to 1939. Also included is a list of chairmen of the Section, from 1974 to 1983.

The Section on Medical History was founded in 1904. In 1905, the Section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented, inviting papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952 and the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974). As of 2019, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Abstract:
Thomas Bond was an American physician and surgeon. He was born May 2, 1713, in Calvert County, Maryland. In 1751 he co-founded the Pennsylvania Hospital, the first medical facility in the American colonies, with Benjamin Franklin, and also volunteered his services there as both physician and teacher. During the Revolutionary War, Bond helped to organize the medical department of the Continental Army. He established the first American field hospitals during the conflict. He was also a member of the local Committee of Safety during the war. Bond died March 26, 1784, in Phildelphia. He is buried in Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia. This small collection consists of 4 items written by Thomas Bond, dating between 1741 and 1776, including a bill for medical service to Captain Thomas Freame and a letter recommending a Mr. Duffield to conduct a small pox incoculation campaign. Yellow Fever Epidemic Correspondence, 1794-1799 (inclusive)

Abstract:
In 1793, the yellow fever epidemic gripped Philadelphia, followed by smaller outbreaks in 1794, 1797, and 1798. Over 5,000 residents died during the first outbreak. At this time, the nation's capital was located in Philadelphia. To avoid the "universal terror," George Washington and Congress fled the city for the outlying suburbs. However, most residents did not have the means to re-locate. Benjamin Rush (1746-1813), a Philadelphia physician, refused to abandon the city. Rush believed the outbreak stemmed from Philadelphia's unsanitary conditions and rotting vegetables. He performed bloodletting procedures on infected patients, curing about 6,000 people. While Rush was adamant that he had identified the origins of the disease and developed its panacea, it would be another century until the epidemic was linked to a mosquito bite, and a half-century more until a cure was developed.
