Abstract:: Albert C. Barnes (1872-1951), an art collector and founder of the Barnes Foundation, had an uneasy relationship with the University of Pennsylvania, despite efforts on both parts to establish a collaboration in art education between the Barnes Foundation and the University. This collection contains primarily correspondence between Barnes (or the secretary of the Barnes Foundation, Nelle E. Mullen, on Barnes' behalf) and University of Pennsylvania officials, largely related to an effort to establish a joint Penn-Barnes course, which met for only a few sessions in 1946 before being called off by Barnes.

Abstract:: George P. Turner (1915-2004) was a consultant and business owner who worked to promote development and tourism in Latin America, particularly the Dominican Republic. He owned multiple companies and consulted for both businesses and governments, garnering expertise in the economics and business of Latin America during the 1960s and 1970s. This collection consists mainly of Turner's professional working records; however there are also education, military, and personal/family records contained within the material.

Eugene Ormandy commercial sound recordings, 1922-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Eugene Ormandy (1899-1985), was a violinist and conductor, best known for his 44-year association with the Philadelphia Orchestra. This collection consists of 663 sound recordings, largely of classical music performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. The collection is arranged in alphabetical order by composer, or occasionally by the title of the recording when multiple composers or a themed recording was created.

Abstract:: George N. Caylor (1885-1973), born George N. Cohen, is best known for his active role in the Socialist Party in Philadelphia and New York in the early 1900s. This collection includes two typescripts of Caylor's autobiographical works, biographical writings about his brother Joseph E. Cohen (1893-1950), and assorted writings by other people relating to the utopian community of Arden, Delaware and the Center for Practical Politics.

Abstract:: Dr. John Hanson Briscoe (1789-1855) was an American doctor and veteran who earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1811 and practiced medicine in Maryland. This collection consists of 11 volumes plus 30 leaves of lecture notes taken by John Hanson Briscoe while a student at the University of Pennsylvania Medical Department, from 1808 to 1811. Included are lecture notes from courses taught by Benjamin Rush on therapeutics, as well as courses taught by Benjamin Smith Barton, Philip Syng Physick, John Redman Coxe and others.

Abstract:: W.R. Harrison was a publisher's representative for A. S. Barnes & Co. and Mather, Case, Tiffany, & Burnham, who sold maps and textbooks to public and private schools and booksellers. This collection consists of a journal kept from October 14, 1841, to February 20, 1844, by W. R. Harrison as well as several items originally laid into the volume, including bills and receipts, a letter, and the lyrics to a few songs.

Jean-Baptiste Colbert correspondence with the abbé François Gaultier , 1711-1714 (inclusive)

Extent:: 2 boxes
Abstract:: The collection comprises 169 items dating from 1711 to 1714, with one item from 1702. Most of the correspondence consists of letters addressed to or drafts written by the abbé François Gaultier, a French diplomatic agent stationed in London who moved in the circles of the Tory opposition. Of 88 letters by Torcy in the collection, 79 are addressed to Gaultier. Most of these are entirely or partially in cipher. Original keys for coding and decoding are in the collection.
