Women's Auxiliary of the German Society of Pennsylvania (Frauen-Hilfsverein) records, 1900-2013 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Women’s Auxiliary of the German Society of Pennsylvania was founded in 1900 to serve as an additional charitable arm of the Society, with particular emphasis on charity for families in distress in the Philadelphia area. Since its founding in 1764, the German Society had provided charitable assistance to German-speaking immigrants in the community, especially those newly arrived in the country. With German immigration on the decline in the early 20th century, the Women's Auxiliary assumed the greater portion of the Society's charitable work. After the First and Second World Wars the Auxiliary engaged in war relief to German speaking lands directly and in cooperation with Quaker relief agencies. As state and federal government undertook more and more welfare work in the city, the auxiliary charter was changed in the 1950s to provide scholarship aid to students who majored in German language study. Abstract:
The Woman's Home Missionary Society of the Philadelphia Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church was organized in 1883, a few years after the national equivalent was formed. Its local programs included immigrant homes, boarding homes for women, Vacation Bible School, and a clinic. After the 1939 merger that resulted in the new corporation of the Methodist Church, the Society was folded into the Woman's Society of Christian Service. The Woman's Society of Christian Service was merged into the United Methodist Women in 1972. The Wister and Butler families were prominent in Philadelphia in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and had ties to numerous other prominent families in the Philadelphia region, Georgia, and Great Britain. Abstract:
This collection contains letters and cards exchanged between various family members, including Elizabeth (Bettina) Vaux Wistar, Mary Emlen Wistar, and Frederic Vaux Wistar. Many of the letters were sent from Europe between 1893 and 1894. There is also an assortment of financial and legal papers. The section "Travel and Sightseeing Materials" is particularly noteworthy. It contains a journal written by Emma F. Wistar in which she recounts her 1866 trip to Niagara Falls, making special note of botanical specimens, including dried plant and flower samples. Additionally, there is a brief account by B.V. Wistar about his experience at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893. The collection contains formal photographs taken by Philadelphia photography studios.

The Wistar and Horner Museum was originally founded as the Wistar Museum in the early 19th century by Caspar Wistar, chair of the Department of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine. In 1818, shortly before his death, Wistar appointed William Edmonds Horner, Dean of the Medical Faculty and professor of Anatomy at the University of Pennsylvania, as curator of the Wistar Museum. At that time, the combined collections of Wistar and Horner became known as the Wistar and Horner Museum. Dr. Joseph Leidy succeeded Horner as curator of the museum in 1847, and contributed hundreds of anatomical, botanical, and animal specimens to the museum collections. Covering nearly 1,400 acres of the 10,000 acre Fairmount Park System, Wissahickon Valley Park epitomizes the breadth of resource available within the city of Philadelphia. Primarily a naturalist landscape, the parklands also support a variety of recreational activities and are home to a number of nationally important structural sites. Wissahickon Valley Park is located along the Wissahickon Creek, and has been a popular location with visitors for over a century and a half. Abstract:
The collection contains journals and two commonplace books, business papers, and a few family letters. It includes a small journal written by a young woman (unknown) on a trip from New York City to Poughkeepsie, 6 month 1835; an album, 1834, which contains a list of the scholars and teachers at Nine Partners Boarding School, and an undated commonplace book containing copies of Quaker sermons and other writings. A Friends Pocket Almanac for the year 1857 contains brief notes concerning family events and Quaker meetings. Correspondence includes two letters from James Wing to his family and a letter, 1844 from M[oses?] Wanzer, Jr., of New Fairfield, Connecticut, to Joseph E. Macomber of Farmington; the two apparently had been classmates at Nine Partners School. Miscellaneous business and legal papers, 1788-1853, concern the Wing, Arnold, and Carpenter families.

Consists of eleven Betacam video tapes containing an interview of Ernest Gordon (1916-2002) about his capture and internment in the Japanese camps in Burma and Siam (now Myanmar and Thailand) during World War II, along with raw scenes, stills, and B-roll. The videos were shot in the Princeton University Chapel in May 1991 by Windborne Productions, which was then working on a project to turn Gordon's book Through the Valley of the Kwai into a feature film.

Abstract:
WIN Magazine was started in January 1966 by the New York Workshop in Nonviolence, a New York City pacifist direct action group which functioned as an affiliate of both the Committee for Nonviolent Action and the War Resisters League. In September 1966 full title of the magazine became WIN Peace and Freedom through Nonviolent Action. WIN solicited articles and poetry promoting many liberal and radical causes including disarmament, draft resistance, war tax refusal, and other pacifist concerns as well as civil rights, women's liberation, and environmental protection. It supported nonviolence as the only way to resolve differences between individuals or groups. The last issue of the magzine was published in October 1983.

The diaries cover the years 1859-1878 and relate daily life, including his attendance at meeting, family concerns, and participation in political meetings during the Civil War.

Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades (now known as Williamson College of the Trades) in Middletown Township, Pennsylvania (Delaware County) was established in 1888 with an endowment from Philadelphia merchant and philanthropist Isaiah V. Williamson. The tuition-free school initially offered vocational training for high school-aged men in areas such as bricklaying, carpentry, and machine shop. Since becoming a post-secondary institution in 1961, the school now offers associate degrees in various fields of specialized technology.
