Abstract:
John Russell Hayes (1866-1945) was a Quaker educator, poet, and Librarian of Swarthmore College, 1906-1927 and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, 1927-1935. The collection contains letters received by Hayes, 1887-1936, diaries covering the period 1880-1935, and miscellaneous papers including an album of collected manuscript samples of contemporary poets. The diaries include poetry and cover personal and Swarthmore College activities and concerns.

Ann Paschall Jackson Family Papers, 1709-1936 (inclusive) 1810-1874 (bulk)

Abstract:
The collection contains diaries, ledgers, and albums of Ann Price Gibson Paschall Jackson (1792-1874) and her family. Related to many Pennsylvania Quaker families including Price, Sharples/Sharpless, Paschall, and Townsend, Ann P. Paschall (later Ann P. Jackson) was recorded as a minister of Darby Monthly Meeting (Hicksite) in 1831. Series 1 is composed of her diaries, 1814 to 1874. The detailed entries concern religious and practical matters. Series 2 contains diaries, ledgers, and albums of related family members including the journals of her first husband, Thomas J. Paschall. Of special interest is the small number of miscellaneous manuscripts in Series 3, particularly a 1709 bill of sale for an enslaved woman to Thomas Paschall, Jr.

Joseph Hoag Family Papers, 1813-1864 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joseph Hoag (1762-1846) was a New York and Vermont Quaker minister who regarded himself as a traditional Friend, opposing both Elias Hicks and Joseph Gurney. He is best known for his "Vision" of 1803 which predicted an American Civil War, and his Journal, the publication of which in 1860 precipitated a schism at Scipio Monthly Meeting into Otisite and Kingite groups. His wife, Huldah Hoag (1762-1850), was also a Quaker minister, as were many of his ten children. The collection contains the manuscript of Joseph Hoag's Journal, as well as some family correspondence and related papers. Of particular importance are the manuscript journal transcribed by Hoag's granddaughter, Narcissa Battery Coffin, under his direction and correspondence from Huldah Hoag, Joseph Hoag, and Lindley Murray Hoag.

Joshua Evans Papers, ca. 1788- ca. 1804 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Joshua Evans, a Quaker minister and abolitionist, was born in 1731 in West Jersey. About the year 1754, he experienced a religious conversion and thereafter devoted his life to sharing his rigorous interpretation of the gospel through an ascetic and pious life style and simple ministry. Barely educated, he was nevertheless acknowledged as a minister by Haddonfield Monthly Meeting in 1759. Evans was a vegetarian and a fervent proponent of the peace testimony, Quaker plainness, and ending slavery. In 1798, he traveled through the southern states condemning slavery in the strongest terms. Returning to New Jersey, he died in July 1798. Evans is representative of the radical, "primitive" Quaker tradition and reflects the diversity of late eighteenth century Quakerism. This collection contains portions of the journals kept while traveling in the ministry among Friends in New York, New England, Canada, the South, and elsewhere, mostly in the period 1788-1798. Donald Carre Turner Genealogical Research Papers, 1856-1990 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Donald Carré Turner (1909-1989) was a construction executive, a genealogist, and an alumnus of Swarthmore College. After his retirement in 1972, Turner devoted much of his time to genealogy. The Turner family was from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and came to this country from England in the seventeenth century. Earlier generations were members of Third Haven and Cecil Monthly Meetings. Lineal surnames include Carré, Birch, Caulk, Betterton, Wilson, Jefferey, Homestead, Course, Sinclair, Williams, and many others. The collection consists primarily of the contents of binders assembled by Donald C. Turner in his research on the genealogy of his family. Turner meticulously documented his sources, and included copies of most of the relevant papers. The names of the files in Series 1 are those used by Turner. Most of the material consists of notes and copies of documents, but there are a few original records.

William Z. Shetter Bloomington Monthly Meeting Papers, 1982-1993 (inclusive)

Abstract:
William Z. Shetter (b. 1927) is Professor of Germanic Studies at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana. He is an active member of the Society of Friends, and served as clerk of Bloomington Monthly Meeting for two terms, 1982-1985 and 1992-1995. During his first tenure as clerk, he kept a detailed personal journal, recording all that was going on in the Meeting as well as his thoughts and perceptions. During his second tenure, the Meeting decided to take under its care the marriage of a same gender couple. The collection contains photocopies of his journal for the years 1982-1985, photocopies of his handwritten notes on the same gender marriage case, and photocopies of the records pertaining to the case including minutes, correspondence with other meetings and Western Yearly Meeting, and news clippings.

Frazer-Willets Family Papers, 1756-1995 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Willets family were members of Westbury Monthly Meeting and lived at their farm, Homewood, from the mid 19th century until 1965. Eliza K. Willets, the last resident, was the daughter of Thomas Whitson Willets and Hannah Keese; known affectionately as Aunt Lila, she graduated from Swarthmore College in 1893. Her sister, Anna, married Edward Morgan Lapham of Chicago in 1908. In 1940, their daughter, Anne Willets Lapham, married E. Wayne Frazer, the son of John E. and Elizabeth Gamber Frazer, and moved to Pennsylvania.

Levinus King Painter (1889-1983) was a Quaker minister, author, and social activist. Born in Spiceland, Indiana, in 1889, he attended Spiceland Academy, Earlham College, and Hartford Theological Seminary. His pastoral service began in Collins, New York, in 1914, and he later served at Poplar Ridge (N.Y.), Monkton and South Starksboro (Vt.), Clintondale (N.Y.), Putney (Vt.), and back to Collins from 1942-56. He also worked as Interim Secretary of Friends Africa Mission from 1956-1957. Papers include scrapbooks, some correspondence, and writings.

Abstract:
Contains the papers of the Foster Family, a Wilburite New England Quaker family of Rhode Island, and the Meyers Family, conservative Orthodox Quakers of the Midwest. The families were united in 1924 by the marriage of Henry Cope Foster (1895-1987) of Warwick, Rhode Island, and Thyra Jane Meyers (1898-1984), born in West Branch, Iowa. The collection contains extensive personal correspondence of five generations of the Foster and Meyers families, school materials, diaries, writings, reminiscences and biographies which offer insight into conservative Quaker life in Iowa, Ohio, and New England in the late nineteenth and twentieth century. Also includes extensive records of the Foster family farm in Warwick, Rhode Island, memorabilia, pictures, and correspondence and related papers of John Henry Foster concerning his AFSC service at Friends Rural Center, Rasulia, India.

Abstract:
Mary Hopkins (b. 2928), Quaker social worker, lecturer, and feminist, wrote and spoke on the issue of women in the Quaker faith and community. Much of her research involved ancient religions and the ways that modern women can incorporate these ideas into their spiritual life. Hopkins gave lectures and slide shows to many groups. Her research and lectures led to a video series titled Woman and her Symbols. The collection includes letters and papers relating to her education and career as a social worker in Pennsylvania, art research, lectures, and Quaker projects. Her activities included Women's Caucus for Art, Friends General Conference, Friends Conference on Religion and Psychology, Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and other Quaker groups.

Evans during his time as Secretary of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (Orthodox), from 1938-1946. Of particular interest are the materials concerning Civilian Public Service. The collection is significant in its documentation of pacifist attitudes and the ways in which the Society of Friends was active during the Second World War.

Deborah Rees African Papers, 1899-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Emory J. and Deborah Gorman Rees were Quaker missionaries in South Africa 1899-1903 and participated in Friends African Industrial Mission (FAIM) in British East Africa (now Kenya) from 1903 to 1926. The collection contains primarily the correspondence of Deborah with her mother and sister, Sarah and Zoa Gorman. The letters begin in 1899 and continue through 1925, with breaks when the Reeses returned to the United States. Also included are stories, letters from Emory to his family, and miscellaneous notes, journal entries and newspaper clippings. The papers were assembled by Rose Adede who wrote a thesis on the effect of the Quaker missionaries in Kenya. Adede's notes and paper are also included in the collection.

Calvin W. and Gwendolyn T. Schwabe Family Correspondence, 1950-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Calvin W. Schwabe (born in 1927) is a veterinarian and public health scientist. He married Gwendolyn Joyce Thompson (nicknamed "Tippy") in 1951. In 1954, the Schwabes joined the Society of Friends. From 1956 to 1966, Calvin Schwabe was a member of the medical and public health facilities of the American University of Beirut. Beginning in 1960, he served as a consultant to the World Health Organization. In 1966, he established the first department and graduate program in epidemiology with a school of veterinary medicine at the University of California, Davis, and served as Professor of Epidemiology within the veterinary and medical schools until his retirement in 1991. The collection contains photocopies of family letters, 1950-1978, sent by Gwendolyn ("Tippy") Schwabe with notes from Cal Schwabe to their parents, 1950 to 1978. Lloyd Bailey and his wife, Mary Margaret, visited Korea for a year (1983-1984) under the auspices of the Friends in the Orient Committee of Pacific Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. They provided guidance and spiritual support for Seoul Monthly Meeting, which they continued through correspondence after their return to the United States. This collection contains the Baileys’ correspondence relating to their trip to Korea and their continued correspondence with Korean Quakers. Writings by and relating to Ham Sok Hon, a Korean Quaker teacher, are also included.

Helen S. Judson Collected Sherwood Select School Papers, 1909-1973 (inclusive)

Sherwood Select School was a Quaker high school in Sherwood, New York, established in 1871. In 1926, it became part of a consolidated public school system, renamed Sherwood Central School. Helen S. Judson (1885-1973) served as a teacher and then principal between 1909 and 1919. Emily Howland (1827-1929), Quaker educator and humanitarian, was a long time supporter of the School until her death in 1929. This collection contains the papers of Helen S. Judson, including correspondence while at the Sherwood Select School and with Emily Howland. It also contains typed transcripts of writings by Emily Howland, 1836-1929, and Sherwood Select School memorabilia including photographs of some of the teachers.

The Longstreth family were Pennsylvania Quakers who married into the Cook and Noble families. Thomas B. Longstreth (1796-1867) was a Philadelphia building contractor who married Lydia Noble (1803-1879), and both were active members of Green Street Monthly Meeting. Lydia was the daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Tompkins) Noble, members of Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, Northern District. Samuel Noble was a successful tanner. The collection includes Longstreth family correspondence, extensive financial papers concerning the Noble and Longstreth properties and estates in Philadelphia, photographs, and scrapbooks concerning Walter C. and Emily Longstreth and Edith Longstreth Wood. Samuel Noble, a Philadelphia tanner, and subsequent generations owned property in the Spring Garden and Northern Liberties sections of Philadelphia, Pa., and in Camden, N.J., and the collection includes deeds, agreements, and other papers concerning these properties.

Dorothea Johnson Blom (1911-1991) was a Quaker writer, artist, and teacher. She became a member of the Society of Friends in 1937 at Chappaqua Monthly Meeting, subsequently transferring to Purchase Monthly Meeting. She co-authored nine books and taught courses at Pendle Hill and other schools in art history and art appreciation with an emphasis on the Jungian concept of growth and spiritual needs. The collection contains her letters to her friend Liza B. ("Betty") Lewis, 1961-1975, reflecting her interest in spiritual, art, and social concerns as well as teaching and family matters. There are also a small amount of published writings and course material.

Morgan Bunting Genealogical Research Papers, ca. 1710-1938 (inclusive)

Morgan Bunting (1863-1929) was a member of the Society of Friends in Darby, Pa., and a descendant of Samuel Bunting (1692-1759) who emigrated from England in the early eighteenth century. An architect by occupation, Bunting had an avid interest in Darby history and genealogy. The collection includes correspondence and genealogical papers concerning the Sellers, Cadwallader, Bartram, and Coleman families. There are also some original documents concerning the Bunting family, including deeds, wills, and an acknowledgment of Samuel Bunting to the Darby Monthly Meeting (1755), as well as a letter from William Poole to Edward Garrigues, 1825.

He was a member of Amawalk Monthly Meeting, attending Croton preparative and worship meetings, and traveled in the ministry, leaving an undated record of the Friends and meetings that he visited. Purdy was donated money, land, and labor towards building a new bridge and school house in Cortlandt. Collection also includes genealogical information compiled by Elliott Baldwin Hunt and Arthur M. Dorothy Harvey Leonard was a nurse and family historian until her death in 2007. The collection includes Leonard's own writings as well as family manuscripts, photographs and other memorabilia. Also includes material from her sister, Ruth Harvey Mavronikolas, and extensive genealogical material compiled by her cousin, Kathaleen Johnson Carter. The Harvey family descends through Jesse Harvey, the son of Michael and Elizabeth, who was married to Keziah Ward in Center Monthly Meeting, NC, in 1786. Nelson Fuson Family Papers, 1909-1996 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Nelson Fuson was a physicist and educator, active in Quaker concerns. The collection contains extensive correspondence and papers concerning his service as a conscientious objector in Civilian Public Service during World War II. As the child of missionaries to China, his hope was to do relief service in China, and many of the papers deal with CPS China Units. However, the China Units were never activated and Fuson was assigned to camps in Maryland, Indiana, New York, and North Dakota. He also attended a seminar in international administration at Columbia University as part of a detached CPS unit, training intended to prepare military and civilians for post-war occupation. In addition to the CPS material, Nelson, a long time professor of physics at Fisk University, and his wife, Marian, were active in Quaker concerns including participation in international student seminars sponsored by the AFSC.

Abstract:
The collection documents the work of the American Friends Service Committee child relief team in the bituminous coal fields of West Virginia and Kentucky, 1931-1933. Of particular interest are (carbon) letters sent regularly to the American Friends Service Committee Coal Committee headquartered in Philadelphia, Pa., recounting almost daily the activities of the team from February-May 1932 as well as the hardships and political unrest. The first year of the program concentrated on feeding and clothing; thereafter, the administration for relief was gradually transferred to local government and was focused on social and economic reconstruction.

Abstract:
David S. Richie (1908-2005) spent his life devoted to public service, particularly in the areas of work camps and cooperatives. A birthright Quaker, he served as Secretary of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Social Order Committee from 1939–1973 and was president of the Board of Friends Housing, Inc. Alfred H. Bloom was the 13th President of Swarthmore College (1991-2009). One of Swarthmore's longest-serving presidents, he emphasized the importance of intellectual rigor, diversity, and social responsibility on campus, and is best known for revitalizing the Honors Program and eliminating varsity football. A linguistics scholar, Bloom formerly held faculty positions at Swarthmore College and Pitzer College, and resigned from his Swarthmore Presidency to become Vice Chancellor of NYU Abu Dhabi. Friends World College was conceived as an accredited, co-educational, degree-granting liberal arts college combining a residence program with the opportunity for foreign travel and study. Planned as a "college without walls," it was sponsored by the New York Yearly Meeting and opened in September 1965. The College flourished in the 1960s counterculture environment, but ran into financial difficulties in the 1970s. While much of its support came from Quakers, in 1975 it became officially non-sectarian. It was merged into Long Island University in 1991. The Lightfoot family was a Pennsylvania Quaker family descended from Thomas Lightfoot, a Quaker minister who emigrated from Ireland to Kennett Monthly Meeting in 1716 with his family. The collection includes three journals which have been attributed to his grandson Thomas on the basis of contextual detail. These accounts document visits to meetings in the mid Atlantic region, New Jersey to Virginia, from 1757 to 1760. Jacob Lightfoot, a son of Thomas and Sarah Lightfoot, married Mary Bonsall, a prominent Quaker minister. The journal of her 1757 religious visit with Grace Fisher to Quaker meetings in the Concord Quarter is included in the collection. Mary and Jacob's grandson, Thomas Lightfoot, was an Indian Agent in southeastern Nebraska during the period of Quaker involvement in President U.S. Grant's "peace policy." Miers Fisher (1748-1819), a birthright Quaker, was a prominent lawyer, legislator, philanthropist, merchant, and scientist in early Federal Philadelphia. Benjamin Warner, publisher and bookseller, married Fisher's daughter, Lydia, in 1814. Born in 1748 in Philadelphia, the son of Joshua and Sarah Rowland Fisher, Miers Fisher married Sarah Redwood in 1774. He was among a group of prominent Quaker merchants who were temporarily exiled to Winchester, Virginia, during the Revolution. Miers and Sarah had sixteen children, only five of which survived him. Their youngest son, Jabez Maud Fisher, was trained as an Engineer, and worked for a railway company and as a Naval Officer for the port of Providence; he moved to Denver, Colorado, in the early 1860's to be with his sons who had built a ranch. The collection includes journals, correspondence, and financial records of Miers Fisher, his daughter, Lydia Fisher Warner, his son, Jabez Maud Fisher, and their respective families.

Bliss Forbush (1896-1987), Quaker educator, administrator, and author, served as the Headmaster of Baltimore Friends School, Chairman of Friends General Conference, and Executive Secretary of Baltimore Monthly Meeting. The collection contains many of his scrapbooks, including "A Forbush Chronicle" is the three volume manuscript 1896-1976, with additions to 1979, of his autobiography. Also in this collection are the manuscripts of Elias Hicks, Quaker Liberal, and A History of Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends, and notes for Moses Sheppard, Quaker Philanthropist of Baltimore. Also includes a small collection of correspondence and papers of his wife, La Verne Hill Forbush.

Bliss Forbush (1896-1987), Quaker educator, administrator, and author, was born in 1896 and died in 1987. Bliss Forbush served as a member of the American Section of the World Council of Churches, 1941-1951, representing Friends General Conference and as a delegate to the first Assembly of the World Council of Churches in 1948. This collection contains primarily minutes, leaflets, and articles printed in Quaker and other periodicals, relating to the World Council of Churches and possible relationship of Quaker bodies to it; together with correspondence of Bliss Forbush and others on behalf of Friends General Conference, with the council's secretariat regarding council membership.

Abstract:
The Painter family was an early Pennsylvania Quaker family that married into the Minshall family of Delaware County. In 1681, William Penn granted Thomas Minshall a land tract which now includes the Tyler Arboretum. The property was home to eight generations of the same family. The collection includes family correspondence, business and legal papers, property records, papers on interests and concerns of the Painter brothers, genealogical papers, and miscellaneous deeds and other papers collected by Minshall Painter. It is a rich source of information not only on the Painter family of Delaware County, Pennsylvania, and the origins of the Tyler Arboretum, but also on agriculture, social life and customs, and nineteenth century Quaker concerns through day books, account books, financial records, correspondence, and other documents.

Elbert Russell (1871-1951) was a Quaker teacher, historian, and writer. His was a leading voice in bringing the insights of liberal, British Friends on the primacy of revelation and the importance of scholarship in the renewal of faith into American Quakerism. He was professor of Bible at Earlham College starting in 1895 and also served as chaplain. He resigned his position in 1915, later taught at Johns Hopkins, and then became Dean at Duke University. This collection contains primarily published articles, sermons, stories, and poems by Elbert Russell.

Priscilla Walker Streets (1848-1927) was a birthright member of Radnor Monthly Meeting (Quaker) and a genealogist of the Walker family of Chester Valley, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of Thomas R. and Mary Baynes Walker and in 1875 was married to Dr. Thomas Hale Streets. These papers are largely genealogical data compiled on the Walker family for her book, Lewis Walker of Chester Valley and His Descendents, 1686-1896, and correspondence after its publication.

Florence E. Taylor was the descendant of a Quaker family whose roots went back to the settlement of Pennsylvania. Her parents were Frederick W. Taylor (1848-1919) and Emily Hunt Taylor (d. 1942). Fred Taylor, a wealthy Philadelphia businessman and philanthropist to the Society of Friends, was the son of Charles Maus Taylor and Anna E. W. Sterling Taylor. His grandfather was Israel Taylor (1782-1850). The collection includes correspondence of Israel Taylor (1782-1850) and Charles M. Taylor (1817-1893), diary (1932-1939) and other writings of Emily H. Taylor, and biographical data concerning the Taylor and Sterling families, including memorabilia and pictures.

Abstract:
Contains the papers of Aaron White (1793-1863) and his family. He was a birthright member of Pasquotank Monthly Meeting, N.C., and transferred to Milford Monthly Meeting, Indiana, in 1829. The Whites were active in Quaker affairs and concerns, including abolition and controversies within Indiana Yearly Meeting. Aaron, as the oldest son in his family, played a central role in the family both in business and personal matters. The bulk of the collection is the correspondence of Aaron and Margaret White, letters sent and received. Their extended family and concerns include relatives in Indiana, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. The letters chronicle the migration of Quakers to the mid-West as well as touch on Quaker activities and issues, slavery in North Carolina, and personal concerns through three generations. Rosalie Stork Regen (1909-1993) was a Quaker author and playwright who joined the Rahway and Plainfield Monthly Meeting in 1941. She was the daughter of Charles Wharton Stork and Elisabeth von Pausinger Stork. An active member of the Society of Friends, Rosalie taught First Day School and visited Quakers all over the world. The collection includes journals kept continuously from 1936 to the time of her death in 1993. She also maintained a prodigious correspondence with family and friends. Includes drafts of her writings, some of which were published: "Peaceful Heroes," a collection of plays, in 1962, and "Forever in Joy," a book of poetry, in 1974.

William Walker Stephens (1824-1902) was the son of Hannah Walker and Stephen Stephens of Chester Valley, Pennsylvania. The family were members of Valley Preparative and Radnor Monthly Meetings of Friends. William Walker Stephens worked as a businessman in Philadelphia and was married three times. His relation, J. Aubrey Anderson, was district attorney in Conshohocken, Pa. Papers include the diaries and day books of Hannah W. Stephens, 1857-1864, William W. Stephens, 1850-1902, and Annie R. Stephens, 1903. Also includes the account book of William W. Stephens, and the correspondence of J. Aubrey Anderson, chief of the Norristown division of the American Protective League, concerning their investigations.

George Wagoner (1896-1957), was a Philadelphia-based orthopedic surgeon who spent his career studying bone pathology. He served in administrative and teaching roles in various hospitals in Philadelphia and pioneered the celloidin mount technique for microscopic examination of total specimen sections. Collection materials consist of photographs, x-rays, glass slides, academic publications, correspondence, and personal papers. This collection is divided into three series. The first series, Photographs and Illustrations, houses photographs, glass slides, and x-rays used for professional and personal purposes. The second series, Papers, contains Dr. Wagoner's personal papers and the third series, Publications, deals with the papers Dr. Wagoner wrote for publication in academic journals.

The Office of Advancement of The College of Physicians of Philadelphia was formed in 2015 by the merging of two departments: the Communications Department and the Development Department, which were created in 1988 and 1987, respectively. The functions of the Office of Advancement include all aspects of fundraising; public relations for the entire College; and administration of the Fellowship and Friends of the Mütter, a membership program open to the public which supports the Mütter Museum. The Records of the Offices of Communication and Development date from 1977 to 1999 and consist of reports, minutes, and committee files; fellowship information, including membership packets; grants, including the capital campaign the New Century Fund; correspondence; press releases and newsclippings; and material regarding the Bicentennial Symposium in 1987.
