Abstract:

The Section on Otology and Laryngology (later Otolaryngology) was established December 12, 1893, under Section 1 of the Rules Governing Sections. The original Executive Committee of the Section included J. Solis Cohen, Charles Burnett, and B. Alexander Randall. Its first meeting was held December 20, 1893, where Harrison Allen was elected as Chairman and Charles Burnett as Clerk. The Section continued to meet on the first Tuesday of every month. In late 2005 or 2006, nearly all College sections were discontinued, including the Section on Otolaryngology. This collection contains material related to the Alfonso Corti centenary celebration, held November 21, 1951. It was collected and compiled by Douglas Macfarlan. Alfonso (1822-1876) Corti received his medical degree at Vienna in 1847 under the supervision of professor Josef Hyrtl, with a thesis on the bloodstream system of a reptile. Abstract:

On 2 November 1904, the Secretary of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia announced that President Arthur V. Meigs had authorized the formation of a new section of the College, the Section on Medical History. Starting in 1905, the section began holding meetings at which lectures on medical history were presented. The section invited papers from physicians and scholars from a variety of backgrounds; most of these papers were published in Transactions and Studies. By the 1970s, the section had become the sponsor of several annual lectures, including the Kate Hurd Mead Lecture (co-sponsored by the [Woman's] Medical College of Pennsylvania, now Drexel College of Medicine) which was started in 1952, the Samuel X. Radbill Lecture (1974), and the W. B. McDaniel Memorial Lecture (1976). As of 2021, the Section on Medical History remains an active body of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Records of the Committee on the Directory for Nurses II, 1881-1936 (inclusive)

Abstract:

The Directory for Nurses of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was founded on 14 May 1882. This referral service allowed doctors and patients to employ qualified nurses in a quick and efficient manner. Over the years, the directories of other hospitals and agencies created competition for the Directory for Nurses of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. In addition, the earnings of the directory jeopardized the non-profit, tax-exempt status of the College. After consulting with the College's legal counsel, the committee recommended that the directory be liquidated. The College voted to accept the committee's recommendation on 6 January 1936, and the directory's operations were discontinued as of 31 March 1936. The Records of the Directory for Nurses consist of 17 large, bound volumes, dating from 1881 through 1936. They include 1 account book, 1881-1909; the register of nurses' names; and a scrapbook documenting the operations of the Directory.

Abstract:

Vol. 1 includes autographs of Fellows as signatories to the constitution, 1787-1922 (pages 5, 7, 34-40k). By action of Council, in 1923 this volume was retired to the College archives. A photocopy of the earlier signatures was made, and new fellows sign that copy. The Council of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was established in 1863. The Council originally consisted of the President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, the Censors, and six elected Councillors who served three year terms. In 1998, the College adopted revised by-laws. The name of the College's governing body was changed from "Council," used for 135 years, to "Board of Trustees" and "Councilors" have become "Trustees."

Abstract:

John Barry (1745-1803), often credited as the Father of the American Navy, served the Continental Navy and the United States Navy for seventeen years. He and his descendents, particularly his nephew Patrick Hayes and grand-nephew Patrick Barry Hayes, became prominent members of Philadelphia society, serving as seamen, merchants, businessmen and politicians. The Barry-Hayes papers are the business, political and personal papers of John Barry and of his family, especially Patrick Hayes and Patrick Barry Hayes. The collection includes correspondence, letterbooks, diaries, logbooks, legal and financial papers related to Barry’s career in the Navy, the business ventures of the Hayes, Keen and Somers families, and their personal lives.

Abstract:

Edward O. Clark (1918-1994) was an avid marine historian and photographer who traveled across the country pursuing interesting vessels and ports of call, and documented the vanishing heritage of American steam navigation. This collection houses the personal papers and research materials of Edward O. Clark and contains four series: “I. Photographs, 1835-1995,” “II. Reference files, 1830-1994,” “III. Correspondence, 1943-1991,” and “IV. Index cards, undated.” This collection dates from 1830 to 1995, with bulk dates of 1860 to 1985, and consists of a variety of materials relating to the Delaware River steamship industry, especially the Wilson Line. Specifically, it includes photographic prints, admeasurements, advertisements, albums, clippings, contracts, receipts, catalogs, correspondence, chronologies, ship manifests, negatives, plans and drawings, writings, and other ephemera.
