Nathan Schlezinger papers on Samuel Leopold, 1979-1981 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Samuel Leopold was born 25 September 1879 in Philadelphia. He received his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School (Penn) in 1902 and completed his internship at the Jewish Hospital. In 1905, he was appointed as an Instructor in Pathology Penn, held the position of Instructor of Neuropathology and Neurology from 1907 to 1917, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 1918, a position he held until 1940. In addition to teaching at Penn, Leopold served on the staffs at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital, Philadelphia General Hospital, and Albert Einstein Medical Center. He was associated with Friends Hospital and served as the Chief Neuropsychiatrist in the municipal courts of Philadelphia. Leopold died on 6 June 1981 in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Nathan Schlezinger collection on Samuel Leopold dates from 1979 to 1981 and consists mainly of biographical information about Samuel Leopold.

Frederick LaMotte Santee certificates and photographs, 1924; 1945; undated (inclusive)

Abstract:
Dr. Frederick LaMotte Santee was born in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania, on 17 September 1906, to Dr. Charles LaMotte Santee and Verna (Lloyd) Santee. In 1938, he received his M.D. from Johns Hopkins University. During World War II, Santee served in the United States Navy medical corps, and then as a physician in a Baltimore, Maryland, housing development. He returned to Wapwollopen in 1954 to work in his father's private practice, where he and his father provided inexpensive, and often free, medical care to the poor in the community. Santee died on 11 April 1980 in Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania. The Frederick LaMotte Santee papers consist of three photographs, all undated, and two certificates, dated 1924 and 1945.

Abstract:
The Records of Philly Health Info span the years 1999 to 2010, and include documentation from pre-planning phases of the project, background information, correspondence, advisory committee meeting minutes, grant funding reports, outreach and partnership files, and website design and maintenance details. The collection is divided into nine series, which resemble the original order in which the material was received. Researchers interested early 21st-century public health initiatives by non-profit organizations will find the collection significant, especially if they are interested in community partnerships and collaboration work. Philly Health Info grew out of and evolved from the College's earlier (physical) community public health resource center, the Everett C. Koop Consumer Health Information Center (CHIC). Abstract:
The Building Committee of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia was appointed on 6 April 1904, shortly after the Fellows elected to construct a new College building on 22nd and Ludlow Streets in Philadelphia. The Building Committee continued to meet through 1914, when the furnishing and construction of the College building on 22nd Street was completed. Several short-term committees were established previously, while the decision was made to construct a new building and purchase a lot at 22nd Street. These committees included the Committee on Needs of College Building and Future Needs of the College (1901), the Committee on "Advisability of Removal or Non-Removal of the College" (1904), and the Committee on Plans for a New College Building (1904). Abstract:
The College of Physicians was founded in 1787 as a private medical society devoted to the advancement of medical education, research, and guidance of the medical profession itself. In order to help fulfill these goals, the College's Fellowship have garnered impressive resources including a biomedical library in 1788, a medical museum in 1858, an institute for the history of medicine in 1976, and museum education programs in 2006. These resources are housed in a building constructed in 1909 at 19 South Twenty-Second Street. With its rich resources, adjoining medicinal herb garden, and ample meeting space, the College serves as a repository for the history of Philadelphia medicine and as an arena for the discussion of contemporary health care issues. Records of the Committee on Internship and Residency, circa 1960s (inclusive)

Abstract:
In December 1961, the College received a $25,000 gift from the Pew Memorial Trust. The gift was intended to help the College reach financial stability and to start a drive benefitting interns and residents in area hospitals. In response, the Committee on Internship and Residency was established in 1962. The Internship and Residency Committee sent out questionnaires to Philadelphia-area hospital administrators, residents, and interns. Data collected from residents and interns included marital status, professional goals, whether they had insurance, and whether they had loans from medical school. The purpose of the questionnaires was to establish whether the Philadelphia area had need of a loan fund (for residents and interns) sponsored by the College. Forty out of the forty-five hospitals contacted responded, and the majority recognized the need for such a program.
