Abstract:
The Trustees of the University of Pennsylvania authorized the establishment of a "Department of Biology" at the University in April 1884 and elected the founding members of its faculty one month later. This collection documents the early history and development of the Department of Biology and the teaching of botany and zoology at the University of Pennsylvania until 1916.
