Abstract:: Urbain Ghislain Joseph Jean Vaes (1896-1967) was a Belgian professor of business who spent most of his career at the University of Louvain/Leuven. After completing his undergraduate studies at Louvain, he received a scholarship to move to Philadelphia to study business at the University of Pennsylvania. The collection includes materials relating to the German occupation of Belgium, likely collected by Vaes during the war.

Abstract:: Paul Schrecker (1889-1963) was a philosopher and professor. There is little information on Schrecker's life during World War I, except that he appears to have been a civilian in Vienna. This collection documents a Viennese citizen's home front experience during World War I. Shrecker saved ephemeral material relating to German propaganda, German efforts to finance the war, German war heroes and memorialization of Germany's participation in World War I, prisoner of war experiences, and rationing, as well as election material from 1919.

Abstract:: The Dorothy E. Withrow collection of World War memorabilia documents the Withrow family's homefront activities during both World War I and World War II, as well as documenting the wars generally through propaganda, pamphlets, and publications. This collection is significant in that it provides perspective of those who were active in the war effort in Philadelphia, specifically through civil defense activities and bond sales.

Abstract:: Richard Norris Williams 2nd (1891-1968) served in the American Expeditionary Forces in World War I and was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the Légion d'Honneur. Later he became the President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. His collection, dating from 1914 to 1968, documents his personal experience in the War as well as a broad view of the entire conflict through collected letters, diary entries, clippings, newspapers, leaflets, photographs and memorabilia.

Abstract:: Frederick P. Lee, an insurance agent, was born in 1880, in England. He immigrated to the United States in 1912 and lived in Santa Monica, California. A number of materials in this collection, including pamphlets and magazines, are stamped with the phrase, "With Compliments of Frederick P. Lee, Fellow of Royal Colonial Institute." As an Englishman living in the US during World War I, it is likely that Lee was interested in promoting England's role in the war and even encouraging US participation, since the US did not enter the war until 1917. The materials in this collection would have been part of that promotion/propaganda effort. This World War I collection includes magazines, serials, pamphlets, newspapers, maps, and postcards dated from 1914-1918. Most items are printed in England and concern England's role in the war.
