Abstract:
The Abortion Study Group was formed by the Family Relations Committee to discuss the Yearly Meeting's position on abortion issues. It met monthly for two years, and wrote position papers supporting the pro-life and pro-choice points of view. Records include minutes, reports, correspondence, and miscellaneous papers.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Administrative Council and its predecessors (including General Secretary Offices), 1829-2005 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The administrative structure of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting has been re-worked a number of times. This finding aid describes administrative records and office files, primarily from the early 20th century to the present -- from the time when the Hicksite and Orthodox Yearly Meetings first began to employ paid staff to handle administrative matters. Today these functions are grouped under the auspices of General Services. This finding aid also describes the records of the General Secretaries of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting from 1967 to 1996.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Ad Hoc Working Party on the Abolition of Torture (1976), 1976 (inclusive)

Abstract:
An Ad Hoc group to investigate the widespread use of torture around the world was appointed after Yearly Meeting in 1975. In 1976, Arthur W. Clark reported on its work and presented a program on Amnesty International. On the suggestion of Kay Camp, Yearly Meeting recommended that Representative Meeting establish a Working Party on the Abolition of Torture.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: AIDS Working Group (1992-2000), 1991-2000 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The AIDS Working Group of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting began in 1992 as a response to the growing severity of the AIDS epidemic. The main focus of the group, organized under the title of "A Quaker Ministry to Persons With AIDS," was to visit those terminally ill with AIDS to provide solace, friendship, and spiritual counseling. The AIDS Working Group also organized the Quaker presence at the Philadelphia AIDS Walk and held retreats and seminars for caregivers of AIDS patients. The group was laid down on June 30, 2000.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Annual Sessions, 1662-2013. (inclusive)

Abstract:
A general meeting for Friends in the Delaware Valley area was first convened at Burlington in 1681. The first general meeting held in Philadelphia was in 1683, and in 1685, it was agreed that the meetings in New Jersey and Pennsylvania should be combined into one yearly meeting with alternate sessions at Philadelphia and at Burlington. The great Separation among Philadelphia Friends into Orthodox and Hicksite branches occurred at the Yearly Meeting of 1827. Through the course of the early 20th century, the PYMs began to draw back together until 1955 when organic union was formally approved, and a reunited PYM, the present organization, was created. Records of the annual sessions of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting include minutes and other records such as epistles sent and recieved which pertain to those annual sessions. Also included are the records of those committees charged with the preparations for the annual sessions.

Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Bequests Committee (1976-2004), 1979-1992 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The Committee on Bequests was established by Representative Meeting September 23, 1976 with instructions to review requests for financial aid from three bequests: The Longstreth Fund (given by Emily P. Longstreth), the Troemner Fund (given by S. Edna Troemner), and the Keeney Bequest (given by Virginia Drysdale Keeney), and to recommend such appropriations as seemed best in the Committee's judgment to the Representative Meeting for approval by that body. The committee continues to 2004 under the name Bequests Granting Group. It reviews applications and makes grants to selected organizations and individuals "seeking to nurture the heritage and testimonies of Friends." It is responsible for recommending uses of all bequests under $100,000. received by PYM.
