Lewis Benson papers, 1932-1986 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Lewis Benson Papers document the life and service of Lewis V. Benson (1906-1986), a Quaker and recorded minister of New York Yearly Meeting. His in-depth reading and study of the writings of 17th century Quakers gave him the venue to bring their message to a modern audience. He did this predominantly through his own writings and lectures.

Rufus M. Jones papers, 1860-1997 (inclusive) 1860-1997 (bulk)

Abstract:: Rufus Matthew Jones (1863-1948) was a Quaker historian, mystic, and philosopher. Born in South China, Maine, to Edwin and Mary Gifford Hoxie Jones, he taught philosophy at Haverford College between 1893 and 1934, and was involved in the Haverford Emergency Unit, American Friends Service, and Fellowship of Reconciliation, and is often attributed as having helped to unite Yearly Meetings in the United States. The collection consists of Rufus Jones' correspondence, diaries, financial papers, manuscripts, Haverford College class notes, short talks, photographs, medals and artifacts and material relating to Jones. In addition, there are the correspondence and photographs of Elizabeth Bartram Cadbury Jones, his wife, and of Mary Hoxie Jones, his daughter. Topics of importance in this collection are Rufus Jones' teaching, his writing and editing, his religious beliefs, his efforts toward the reunification of branches within the Society of Friends, his work for various service...(see more)

George M. Justice Memorandums, 1825-1861, 1825-1861 (inclusive)

Abstract:: George M. Justice was a successful Philadelphia merchant and important Hicksite Quaker. Beginning in 1825 until shortly before his death, he kept volumes of memorandum reflecting his thoughts on religion, the Hicksite Separation and its aftermath in Philadelphia, family information, astronomy, slavery, and other topics.

George H. Burr Collected Papers on the Quaker Separation, 1822-1836 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Burr Collection includes manuscripts which document the Hicksite position during the Separation of 1827/28 in Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and the trial over the Crosswicks School Fund. It is directly related to the Southard Papers/RG5/312, which contain a more complete description of the controversy. It also includes Burr's manuscript on the History of the Society of Friends which he compiled for Southard as background in preparing his case representing the Hicksite position.

Trenton Friends Association Records, 1892-1908 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Trenton Friends Association was formed in 1892 in Trenton, New Jersey, to promote "a thorough knowledge of the history and testimonies of the Society of Friends." Meetings were held monthly, except in the summer, in the Trenton Friends meeting house. Papers were presented on a variety of topics. The collection contains minutes, constitution and bylaws, and manuscripts of papers read at meetings.

Media Friends' Association minutes, 1894-1925 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Media Friends Association, a Quaker study and social group, was established in 1894 in Media, Pennsylvania, by members of Providence Preparative Meeting (Hicksite). The goal of the Association was to further discussion and knowledge of the history and testimonies of Friends, and the meetings, which included reports, papers, and readings, were open to all who were interested. The collection contains one volume of minutes, with constitution and by-laws included.
