- Willis A. Slater Papers contain reports, blueprints, diaries, correspondence, photographs, and notebooks from Slater’s professional career as a civil engineer. These papers, ranging from 1910 to 1937, illustrate his career from graduate student to professor to the National Bureau of Standards and finally to Lehigh University. Much of this collection is made up of testing reports from Slater himself or from companies that he consulted for; and many of these reports were on his specialty, reinforced concrete. The most notable items in this collection are Slater’s diary and papers on the Stevenson Creek Dam and the investigation papers from the Knickerbocker Theater disaster. This collection can be used for studying the beginning of the use of reinforced concrete and the building of the Stevenson Creek Dam. The photographs in this collection may also be useful for studying construction, work sites, and labor in the early twentieth century.
