Abstract:: Dorothy Gladden Harris (1902-1972), Quaker librarian, archivist, scientific illustrator, was a librarian and archivist at Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College and a researcher in Quaker history. This collection contains correspondence, articles, scientific drawings, and course, research, and reference notes relating to Dorothy Harris's activities as librarian and archivist at Friends Historical Library and as a Quaker researcher. Includes correspondence relating to her work in London, England, as part of an exchange of Quaker librarians in 1947.

Abstract:: Frederick Barnes Tolles (1915-1975), Quaker librarian, teacher, and historian, was Director of Friends Historical Library from 1951-1970, and a member of the Department of History at Swarthmore College. This collection contains the papers of primarily relating to his books and articles on Quaker history and biography, along with other writings, including research notes on a proposed history of Swarthmore College.

Mary Sullivan Patterson Papers, 1782-1982 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Mary Sullivan Patterson (1906-1987) was a Quaker historian and genealogist from Swarthmore, Pennsylvania. The collection contains family papers and correspondence; genealogical notes on the Thomson, Sullivan, and other related families; writings on various topics, especially Delaware County history and the Caleb Pusey House; diaries, notes, correspondence, and a manuscript concerning Patterson's 1957 research trip to England to study Quaker emigration to America. Also a diary and letters from her trip to England and Germany in 1924 with a young Friends group.

Abstract:: Papers of Quaker Biblical scholar Henry J. Cadbury (1883-1974), a founder of the American Friends Service Committee and Nobel Prize winner on behalf of the American Friends Service Committee. Cadbury taught at Haverford (1910-1919 and 1954-1963) and Bryn Mawr Colleges as well as Harvard Divinity School as Hollis Professor of Divinity.

Samuel Gummere diary, 1854

Abstract:: Diary of Samuel Gummere's 1854 trip to England. Early entries describe the ten day voyage by steamship, including descriptions of passengers, accommodations on board, and sea sickness. Later entries describe Gummere's exploration of England, including visits to Liverpool and London.

Elizabeth Hudson Morris diary, 1743-1778 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Elizabeth Hudson Morris was a Quaker minister who traveled through the United States, Ireland, and Scotland. Diary entries describe Elizabeth's travel as a Quaker minister throughout the British colonies in North America, as well as Ireland and Scotland, and Quaker meetings. Copied versions of letters from Jane Hoskins are also included in the volume.

Joel Swayne diary, 1798-1800 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Joel Swayne's diary entries describe his journey to the Seneca nation and the two years he spent there. Swayne provides detailed descriptions of Cornplanter (Gaiänt'wakê), the chief, his family, the village and villagers, cultural differences between the Quakers and the Senecas, the difficulty of the language barrier, and discussions between Quaker missionaries and Seneca members.

Abstract:: Thomas Wistar's journal entries largely describe his work as an Indian Commissioner, including visits to Washington D.C., the Seneca Nation, the Wichita Indian Agency, and other Native American Reservations. In addition to his work as a commissioner, entries detail social calls with family and friends, descriptions of Quaker meetings, and religious reflection and prayers.

Amy Fenimore diary, 1803-1840 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Amy Fenimore was a Quaker from Philadelphia. Her diary entries largely focus on prayers and religious reflection, and many describe Quaker meetings, and births, deaths, and marriages within the Quaker community. Entries during the years 1832-1833 discuss the Hicksite-Orthodox Quaker separation.
