Deborah Rees African Papers, 1899-1985 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Emory J. and Deborah Gorman Rees were Quaker missionaries in South Africa 1899-1903 and participated in Friends African Industrial Mission (FAIM) in British East Africa (now Kenya) from 1903 to 1926. The collection contains primarily the correspondence of Deborah with her mother and sister, Sarah and Zoa Gorman. The letters begin in 1899 and continue through 1925, with breaks when the Reeses returned to the United States. Also included are stories, letters from Emory to his family, and miscellaneous notes, journal entries and newspaper clippings. The papers were assembled by Rose Adede who wrote a thesis on the effect of the Quaker missionaries in Kenya. Adede's notes and paper are also included in the collection.

Bowles family correspondence, 1922-1960 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Bowles family was deeply involved with Quaker missionary and relief work during the 20th century. In 1900, the Bowles moved to Japan under the auspices of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting and managed the Friends School and established the Tokyo Friends Center. During World War II, the Bowles family moved to Hawaii and worked with war refugees. The Bowles family correspondence consists of correspondence from Gilbert and Minnie Pickett Bowles to their son Gordon Townsend Bowles from 1922 to 1932 and to Gordon Townsend and Jane T. Bowles from 1932 to 1960. This correspondence is essentially family correspondence, but also includes information regarding the Bowles' Quaker relief work, their views on Quakerism and their day-to-day activities.

Abstract:: The Willits Trust was a Quaker organization dating from the late 19th and early 20th century based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, dedicated to providing religious tracts such as the journal The Africans' Friend to black Americans in the Southern United States and to Liberians. These records consist of correspondence, minutes, financial records, missionary materials, the will of Charles L. Willits, and miscellaneous items.

Henry Simmons letterbooks, 1797-1799, undated (inclusive)

Extent:: 0.06 linear ft. (2 volumes)
Abstract:: Henry Simmons, who belonged to the Middletown Monthly Meeting, spent a year with the Seneca near Cornplanter's village along with Halliday Jackson and Joel Swayne. There, the group of missionaries set up a school and model farm. Simmons's letterbooks are comprised of business and government correspondence related to his work with various Indigenous nations.

J. Lindley Spicer scrapbook, Undated.

Extent:: 0.2 linear ft. (1 volume)
Abstract:: J. Lindley Spicer's scrapbook is largely comprised of photos and printed images of Quakers, meeting houses, meetings for worship, and Quaker missions in Mexico, Africa, Palestine, and China. The volume also includes a number of clipped newspaper articles on various Quaker leaders. Inside the scrapbook is an index of photos and clippings.
