Abstract:
This collection consists of papers by and relating to the Quaker, educator, and activist, Joan Cannady Countryman. It consists of manuscripts and published materials by and about Joan, as well as those by and about her family members. Joan Countryman (1940-) is a Quaker, educator, and activist. Throughout her life she has been involved with a variety of education initiatives and Quaker organizations. She is a prolific author of mathematics and autobiographical essays.

Abstract:
The collection contains the writings of T. Noel Stern and his wife, Katherine. The writings document his professional and volunteer activities, from his work with the U.S. Forestry Service (1941) to his involvement with Dartmouth town government (1990s). Also reviews of his autobiographical novel, Secret Family (published privately in 1988). The autobiography concerns his life as the child of parents born out of wedlock in early 1910's America.

Abstract:
Robert O. and Margaret C. Blood were active Quakers, members of Ann Arbor Monthly Meeting, MI. The collection contains primarily the papers of Margaret Blood, including correspondence, writings, journals (mostly fragments) after about 1960. There are also some writings by Robert Blood including student papers and articles for periodicals, as well as material on their joint counseling workshops and papers concerning their son, Peter Blood, and the draft during the Vietnam era.

Abstract:
David S. Richie (1908-2005) spent his life devoted to public service, particularly in the areas of work camps and cooperatives. A birthright Quaker, he served as Secretary of the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Social Order Committee from 1939–1973 and was president of the Board of Friends Housing, Inc. He also was involved with the American Friends Service Committee and other organizations. These papers are divided into correspondence, writings, and topical files as assembled by Richie.

Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener. Kenya correspondence, 1930-1970 (bulk) 1920-1984 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains the correspondence of Robert Bryan Michener and Edith Riner Michener written while serving as Quaker missionaries in Kenya, East Africa, in the 1930s. Working under the auspices of the American Friends African Mission, a program of the Five Years Meeting, R. Bryan Michener served as a physician at the hospital in Kaimosi and then principal of the Boys' School. Edith Michener first taught English at the Boys' School and then organized the Girls' Boarding School. Their correspondence, photocopies and some originals, is mainly addressed to family members in Kansas and American Friends Board of Missions. It provides insight into their professional and personal lives in East Africa as well as the tensions within the mission system and colonial Africa of the period.

Clendenon Family Papers, 1789-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The collection contains correspondence, journals, and other papers of the Robert and Elizabeth Clendenon family who served as Quaker missionaries to the Native Americans in Tunesassa, Cattaraugus County, New York, in 1812-1816 and were early settlers of Ceres, McKean County, Pennsylvania. Of special note are the diary and correspondence of Robert Clendenon. The bulk of the correspondence was received by Lydia Clendenon Chevalier and includes two letters dictated by Jacob Johnson, a member of the Seneca tribe whom she met at Tunesassa. Other letters provide insight into the lives of her unmarried sisters who struggled to make a living as teachers. The letters mention family events, Quaker and anti-slavery concerns. Also included are research material and writing compiled by Dorothy Godfrey Wayman in preparation for her articles on the Clendenon and Chevalier families.

Judy and Michael Van Hoy Papers, 1967-2015 (inclusive)

Abstract:
The papers of Judy and Michael Van Hoy, members of Green Street Monthly Meeting, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, who have been deeply involved in social justice concerns particularly through the Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Workcamps programs. Both also were active in international workcamps, especially in Kenya. Judy Van Hoy maintained correspondence with many international workcampers, including extensive correspondence with Jane Swart, a South African who worked at the Quaker Peace Centre in the early 1990s. In addition to their employment with Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, both Van Hoys are teachers and peace and social activists. The papers include correspondence, writings, and related material and provide insight into the concerns of late 20th century Philadelphia Quakers.
