Philadelphia Yearly Meeting Records: Prison Service Committee (1958-1976), 1958-1975 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Philadelphia Yearly Meeting's Prison Service Committee of Southern New Jersey was organized in the mid 1960s. It focused its activities on the reform of female and juvenile justice. Members of the Committee developed a successful Friendly Visitors Program, staffed by volunteers, and a volunteer Probation Counselor Program. The Committee was also involved in lobbying efforts, maintained a speakers' bureau, and published a newsletter, "No Bars Hold." Records include minutes of the Prison Service Committee of Southern New Jersey and its predecessor, Prison Service Committee, staff records, reports, financial and personnel records, and publications/projects files.

Sarah Hopper Palmer Papers, 1705-1883 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Sarah Hopper Palmer (1796-1885) was the eldest child of Isaac T. Hopper (1771-1852), noted Hicksite Quaker abolitionist and social reformer. The collection was apparently compiled as a basis for Lydia Maria Child's Life of Isaac T. Hopper, which was first published in 1853. The original manuscript of the published book is included in the collection. The collection contains material on the Palmer, Hunn and Jenkins families, family correspondence, legal and financial papers, and memorabilia. Of particular interest is the correspondence of Isaac T. Hopper which includes references to his work with Pennsylvania Society for Promoting the Abolition of Slavery, the Anti-slavery Society of New York, and the New York Prison Association.

The Wood Family Papers contains papers from a Quaker family active in 19th century New York City Friends affairs, compiled by M. S. (Mary Sutton) Wood. Included are business correspondence concerning the printing house founded by Samuel Wood and his sons, correspondence from prominent Friends concerning work for social causes including abolition, freedmen, prisoners, First Day schools, and peace, and genealogical material, writings, and reminiscences by Mary S. Wood.

She served on the Rochester Monthly Meeting and New York Yearly Meetings Prison Committees and as clerk of the Oversight Committee at Attica Prison.

Wilbur K. (Wilbur Kelsey) Thomas Papers, 1914-1933 (inclusive)

Abstract:
Wilbur K. Thomas (1882-1953), a Quaker born in Indiana, was executive secretary of the American Friends Service Committee from 1918 to 1929. He graduated from Friends University in 1904, served as pastor of various Quaker churches, graduated from Yale Divinity School in 1907, earned a Ph.D. from Boston University in 1914, and was a member of Boston Friends Meeting after 1909. He was director of the Carl Schurz Memorial Foundation in Philadelphia from 1930 to 1946. The collection contains biographical material, correspondence (1918-1933), speeches and writings relating to his work with the AFSC and as a pastor in Quaker communities. Topics covered include peace, civil liberties, social service, prisons, and relief activities in Russia in 1922, as well as his Ph.D. dissertation, "the Social Service of Quakerism."

Abstract:
This collection includes letters of Elizabeth Fry, both original and photocopies. The letters cover a wide range of subjects, from personal news to prison reform. Her correspondence is particularly concerned with education and religious instruction of prisoners, and the treatment of women and children prisoners. One letter describes the philosophy of Quaker marriages. Most of the recipients are unnamed. Also included are several letters of Joseph Fry, passes to visit Newgate prison, and photographs of Elizabeth Fry.

Abstract:
The collection is organized into four folders: the group's general records, including the initial plan and charter; the records of the Civilian Readjustment Committee, the post-war arm of the group; information on a project in Brazil; and writings by people outside the group. Of interest are transcript talks given by Peter F. Amoroso of the New York Department of Correction, and Austin H. MacCormick of the Osborne Association. There is also a carbon copy, attributed to John S. Gough, of the Preamble and Constitution of the Spears Mobile Clinics, a medical service to the people of Syria and Lebanon.
