Abstract:: John Russell Hayes (1866-1945) was a Quaker educator, poet, and Librarian of Swarthmore College, 1906-1927 and Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College, 1927-1935. The collection contains letters received by Hayes, 1887-1936, diaries covering the period 1880-1935, and miscellaneous papers including an album of collected manuscript samples of contemporary poets. The diaries include poetry and cover personal and Swarthmore College activities and concerns.

Abstract:: This collection represents material created by several generations of the Booth Family. The material created by James Curtis Booth is professional in nature. Material by his daughters and other family members is more personal in nature. There are also literary works, some of them published by George ("Amyntor") Booth, the father of James.

Charles Morice papers, 1862-1970 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Charles Morice was a prolific spokesman for the Symbolist movement. He was at times a poet, playwright, shipping clerk, literary critic, professor of literature, and lecturer. He collaborated in the founding of Mercure de France, the “organ of the purest Symbolism.” He attended Stéphene Maliarmé’a “Tuesdays,” weekly social gatherings of Symbolist writers and painters. While writing for Le Matin he was assigned to cover the death penalty debate. He corresponded with many famous artists on their thoughts on the death penalty. He also collaborated with the painter Paul Gauguin on his book Noa Noa, and with Auguste Rodin on his book Les Cathedrals des France. Morice wrote and had several unfinished manuscripts when he died on March 18, 1919. The collection of Morice’s papers comprises nine boxes and sixteen volumes. Abstract:: The volume features poems copied by various friends of Phebe Clapp Thomas, and focuses on friendship, reflection, religion, and faith. Among those extracts that were signed, signatures from the following individuals are included: Jemima Hamond, Ann M. Thorne, Elias Hicks Jr., Joseph Griffen, B. Barton, Elizabeth Wenzer, Adeline Begnor, Jane Charlotte Leach, Marcia L. Haight, and E. Mitchell. A number of extracts are unsigned, including extracts of poetry by Shakespeare and Sir Walter Scott.
