Abstract:: The collection comprises a signed typescript of a paper (12 leaves) presented by James E. Gibson at the annual meeting of the Montgomery County Historical Society at Norristown, Pennsylvania, in 1935, on the German-born physician Bodo Otto, who served at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary War. The paper preceded Gibson's book on Otto, which was published in 1937. Also included is a newspaper clipping of a German-language article on Bodo Otto by Carl Frederick Haussmann, published in the Philadelphia Gazette-Democrat, in 1937, which was based on Gibson's material.

Patrick Coad family papers, 1798-1888 (inclusive)

Abstract:: Patrick Coad (1783-1872), an Irish immigrant who settled in Philadelphia, was the first patentee of a graduated galvanic battery with insulated poles. Touting his battery among other uses as an instrument that helped cure various diseases, Coad’s invention attracted a good deal of attention within the scientific and medical communities. A teacher whose interests focused on medicine and the sciences, Coad also travelled throughout Pennsylvania and the surrounding area as a lecturer on the natural sciences. The collection includes Coad’s correspondence, his lecture and medical notes, and ephemera, such as newspaper clippings, pamphlets and broadsides, publicizing his galvanic battery and lectures. Several of Coad’s family members are also documented through correspondence, ephemera, and estate items, including his son Joseph R. Coad (1829-1868), a prominent Philadelphia physician. A family scrapbook with miscellaneous materials is also included.

Rush family papers, 1748-1876 (inclusive)

Abstract:: The Rush Family papers includes material from Benjamin Rush, physician, social activist, educator, writer and patriot; his brother Jacob Rush, lawyer, Supreme Court judge, and patriot; and Benjamin’s son James Rush, physician and Treasurer of the United States Mint. These American men were “strong characters, zealous patriots during the stirring period in which they lived, tenacious of their convictions and of the high standard of individual duty which they set for others, and typified in themselves,” (Richards, page 53). The bulk of the collection is the papers of Dr. Benjamin Rush and his son Dr. James Rush. Judge Jacob, John, Richard and William are represented, but to a much lesser degree. Abstract:: Dr. Isaac Anderson (1796-1865) and his son Dr. Benjamin Smith Anderson (1821-1894) were both eminent physicians who practiced in the area of Delaware County, Pennsylvania. The Dr. Benjamin S. and Dr. Isaac Anderson account books, 1821-1905, consist of 32 volumes, mostly ledgers of medical practice from Dr. Isaac Anderson and his son Dr. Benjamin S. Anderson. There are also several ledgers of farm, business, real estate, and other transactions, and some volumes from other family members.

Abstract:: Dr. Josephus Tuck Ullom was a general practitioner in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, who lived in the area from 1901 till his death in 1965. He served as Chief of Staff of Chestnut Hill Hospital as well as achieving prominence in various other medical endeavors and organizations. The Dr. Josephus T. Abstract:: Goschenhoppen, one of the oldest continuously existing Pennsylvania German communities in America, is a geographic region in Montgomery County. The Goschenhoppen Historians document and ephemera collection, 1758-1992, documents local history and is rich in genealogical data. It includes receipts and accounts, indentures, vital records, correspondence, and other original documents; ephemera, such as advertisements, pamphlets, broadsides, and sheet music, are also in the collection. Fine examples of Fraktur are of special interest.

Abstract:: Edward Bell Krumbhaar (1882-1966) was a distinguished pathologist and cardiac physician, as well as one of Philadelphia’s leading historians of medicine. A founder of both the Section on Medical History of the College of Physicians and the American Association of the History of Medicine (AAHM), Krumbhaar also served as president of the College and of the AAHM. The E.B. Krumbhaar papers covers Krumbhaar’s accomplishments and contributions to pathology and cardiac physiology from the early to mid-twentieth century. This collection contains Krumbhaar’s research files, administrative records related to organizations and institutions in which he was involved, correspondence, and medical writings. College of Physicians Early Records, 1788-1847, 1889, 2001

Abstract:: The College of Physicians Early Records collection documents some of the College of Physician’s earliest activities, including attempts by Fellows to diagnose and treat the 1793 yellow fever epidemic in Philadelphia. The collection, which was discovered by chance in 2001 by College foreman Leroy Green, contains letters, manuscripts, and committee reports. Founded in 1787, the College assembled prominent Philadelphia physicians “to advance the science of medicine and to thereby lessen human misery." The first Fellows of the College included Abraham Chouvet, Gerard Clarkson, Samuel Duffield, James Hutchinson, George Glentworth, Adam Kuhn, John Morgan, Thomas Parke, Benjamin Rush, and William Shippen Jr., almost all of whom are represented in this collection. Abstract:: The George Bacon Wood Papers collection documents George Bacon Wood’s professional and personal life from 1813 to 1870. Dr. George Bacon Wood was an accomplished physician and author, and also lectured at several medical institutions in the Philadelphia region. William Williams Keen's Material Related to the Operation of President Cleveland, 1893, 1905, 1915-1918

Abstract:: This collection documents William Williams Keen’s role in President Grover Cleveland’s 1893 then-secret surgery through Keen’s correspondence and reflections. Given the tumultuous financial markets at the time, President Cleveland’s health was kept secret, with Keen being entrusted to perform a quick yet safe surgery on the President while aboard the yacht Oneida. The collection primarily covers developments surrounding two events: the surgery on July 1st, 1893, and the publication of Keen’s Saturday Evening Post article which appeared on September 22nd, 1917. Abstract:: The Joseph McFarland Papers collection documents Dr. McFarland’s medical career, particularly his involvement in parotid tumor and tetanus vaccination research from 1900 to 1943. Dr. McFarland was born in Philadelphia on February 9th, 1868, and received his M.D. degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1889. He continued to study and teach on pathology at various institutions in Philadelphia throughout his career. The collection contains two series, “Correspondence” and “Subject Files.” Material in the collection includes letters sent to Dr. McFarland regarding his research, medical case notes, writings by Dr. McFarland, legal documents, and curriculum planning files. Abstract:: Dr. Ellwood L. Drake (1873-1962) was a physician in the Northeast section of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from the late 19th century to the mid-20th century. The Elwood L. Drake scrapbooks, 1932-1950, consist of scrapbooks that document the social and professional activities of Ellwood Drake and contain ephemera such as greeting cards, programs, ticket stubs, menus, and business cards, as well as letters and newspaper clippings that mention events he attended. Several pages in the scrapbooks have annotations by Drake.

Grand View Hospital Auxiliary collection, circa 1913-2013

Abstract:: Grand View Hospital in Sellersville was the first hospital in Bucks County, Pennsylvania upon its founding in 1913. Two years later it opened a Nurse's Training School, the only one in Bucks County. The hospital is still in operation as of 2014. The Grand View Hospital Auxiliary collection, circa 1913-2013, includes a large quantity of scrapbooks and publications and ephemera, as well as some photographs and a small amount of correspondence and other documents.

Clyde R. Flory film reels and death certificates, circa 1930-1950

Abstract:: Dr. Clyde R. Flory (1892-1963) was a physician based in Sellersville, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He served in the U.S. Navy as a navigator in World War I and as a captain and medical officer in World War II. During his wartime service he invented a special traction bar to cut the amount of equipment used to reduce fractures, and also discovered a new technique for the cure of syphilis. The Clyde R. Flory film reels and death certificates, circa 1930-1950, consist of nearly 200 death certificates from the USS Savannah and about one dozen film reels (16mm and 35mm).

Abstract:: Dr. Chevalier Jackson (1865-1958) was a medical doctor whose invention of the bronchoscope saved countless lives by removing foreign bodies, such as pins, coins and teeth, from people's throats. He authored over four hundred medical articles and twelve books, including his autobiography, which became a best-seller in 1938. The Chevalier Jackson papers at Sunrise Mill, 1914-1940, consists of patient records (1925-1928), drafts of medical articles, laryngology conference materials (1925, 1932), correspondence, and photographs.

Abstract:: Oliver P. James (1815-1894) was a prominent doctor and community member in Doylestown, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He, his wife Sarah (1824-1906), and their three children Oliver (1860-1890), Martha (1862-1918), and Sarah (1864-1954) lived at what is now known as the James-Lorah Memorial Home at 132 N. Main Street in Doylestown. In 1896, Dr. James' daughter, Martha, married George H. Lorah (1863-1945), a minister at the Doylestown Methodist Episcopal Church. Martha's sister, Sarah James was a charter member of the Village Improvement Association of Doylestown (VIA), and upon her passing in 1954, the family home and its contents and property, as well as a trust fund for maintenance were bequeathed to the VIA. The James and Lorah families papers, 1833-1954, consist of original manuscript documents from the James and Lorah families, primarily Dr. Oliver P. Sarah Wistar Rhoads (1839-1920) married William Gibbons Rhoads (1838-1880) on November 28, 1866. At that time, the Rhoads, Gibbons and Wistar families began corresponding, the result being an outstanding collection illustrating family support, friendship and love.
